Full Job Description
The Orthopedic Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant provides specialized care to patients with musculoskeletal issues, including bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. The NP will assess, diagnose, treat, and manage patients’ orthopedic conditions, prescribe medications, and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to ensure the highest standard of care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Patient Assessment & Diagnosis:
- Perform comprehensive evaluations of patients with orthopedic conditions.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests (e.g., X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, and lab tests).
- Diagnose musculoskeletal disorders and develop appropriate treatment plans.
- Treatment & Management:
- Prescribe medications, physical therapy, or orthopedic devices (e.g., braces, splints).
- Administer injections (e.g., cortisone) or other treatments for pain management.
- Assist in minor procedures, such as wound care, casting, or joint aspirations.
- Manage post-operative care, including follow-up appointments, wound care, and patient education.
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, and other healthcare providers.
- Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and case discussions.
- Assist in surgical planning and patient education before and after surgery.
- Patient Education & Counseling:
- Educate patients and their families on managing orthopedic conditions, recovery, and rehabilitation.
- Provide instructions on the use of orthopedic aids, exercises, and prevention strategies.
- Documentation:
- Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of patient assessments, treatments, and progress in the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Education: Master’s or Doctorate in Nursing (MSN or DNP) with a focus on Nurse Practitioner certification or Completion of accredited Physician Assistant Program
- Licensure: Active and unrestricted Nurse Practitioner license or Physician Assistant in the state of Missouri / Kansas
- Certification: National certification as an NP (e.g., ANCC or AANP); PA-C
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in an orthopedic or musculoskeletal-related field is preferred.
- Skills:
- Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills.
- Proficiency in interpreting imaging studies (X-rays, MRIs, etc.).
- Ability to perform minor procedures such as casting, joint injections, and wound care.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
