Physician Assistant – Orthopedics and Oncology with Bone & Joint Specialty (Navarre)

Position Summary: The Physician Assistant for Beacon Bone & Joint Specialty (Navarre) collaborates with a dual fellowship-trained orthopedic oncologist/traumatologist and a multidisciplinary team to deliver exceptional care. The advanced practice provider (APP) will assess, diagnose, and manage orthopedic oncologic and traumatic conditions while supporting health promotion, illness prevention, and patient education. As a valued member of the team, the PA will engage in outpatient and inpatient care, assist in surgery, and contribute to the development of clinical protocols.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Conduct thorough assessments, medical histories, and physical examinations for new, established, and post-operative patients in the ambulatory setting.
  • See consultations on hospital floors and liaise with the multidisciplinary care team including orthopedic surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, physiatry, nutrition, physical therapies and case management.
  • Diagnose and manage orthopedic and oncologic injuries/conditions.
  • Order and interpret laboratory and imaging studies with support from an orthopedic oncology nurse navigator.
  • Educate patients and families on treatment plans, rehabilitation, and preventative care strategies.
  • Ensure accurate documentation, coding, and completion of diagnoses to facilitate insurance reimbursement.
  • Optional, but not required trauma call rotation available for an additional stipend

Surgical Support

  • Prepare patients for surgery, including positioning, skin preparation, and anesthesia coordination.
  • Assist in complex orthopedic surgeries and provide pre-and post-operative patient care.

Professional Development

  • Attend approved seminars, conferences, and training to stay current in orthopedic care.
  • Maintain membership in professional organizations to enhance knowledge and practice standards.

Operational Support

  • Implement improvements in clinical procedures to optimize efficiency and patient care.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and monitor care outcomes.
  • Collaborate with physicians to ensure timely, high-quality care delivery.
  • Contribute to the development of clinical protocols and compliance with regulatory standards.

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in department meetings and fulfill all education and competency requirements.
  • Maintain active licensure, certification, and registration.
  • Adhere to universal precautions, protective equipment protocols, and ergonomic practices.
  • Be available for overtime, alternate schedules, or additional shifts as needed.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Current Indiana licensure and certification as a Physician Assistant.
  • At least two years of experience preferred, particularly in orthopedic surgery or oncology (new graduates are welcome to apply).

  • High-level analytical skills for patient assessment and treatment planning.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with patients and healthcare teams.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the legal and regulatory scope of practice for a Physician Assistant.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

  • Clinical environment with occasional exposure to biohazards.
  • Ability to walk or stand for extended periods.
  • Capability to lift up to 50 pounds and assist in positioning/lifting patients.
  • Perform CPR and other essential physical tasks as needed.
