Full Job Description
The Neurosurgery Physician Assistant plays a vital role in delivering exceptional care for patients under the guidance of our esteemed neurosurgeons. Reporting clinically to the Practice Site Physician(s) and administratively to the Practice Manager/Director, this position provides a blend of pre-, intra-, and post-operative patient care in both clinical and hospital settings.
Core Responsibilities
Surgical Support:
- Prepare patients for surgery, including positioning, skin preparation, and administering local anesthetics.
- Act as a first or second assistant during operations, performing surgical exposure, dissections, wound closure, and application of immobilization devices.
- Assist with monitoring equipment and radiographic devices.
Hospital-Based Patient Care:
- Conduct daily inpatient rounds and document medical plans.
- Manage routine medical care by ordering diagnostic tests, labs, medications, and nutrition.
- Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and effectively communicate treatment plans to surgeons, nurses, and families.
- Perform procedures such as placing indwelling lines and ICP monitors, as dictated by specialty.
- Assess emergencies and initiate appropriate care until the supervising physician arrives.

Coordinate patient discharges, including follow-up planning, adjunctive therapy management, and patient education.

Participation in the on-call rotation
Outpatient Clinical Care:
- Conduct comprehensive medical histories and physical exams.
- Develop and implement care plans, documenting and coding diagnoses for insurance purposes.
- Provide pre-and post-operative education to patients and families.
- Perform therapeutic procedures such as suturing, wound care, and infection management.
Quality and Improvement Contributions:
- Assist with enhancing clinic procedures to improve healthcare delivery.
- Participate in quality improvement programs, protocol development, and policy compliance.
- Maintain strong communication with physicians to ensure high-quality patient services.
Organizational Responsibilities
- Attend departmental meetings and complete mandatory education and training within designated timeframes.
- Maintain active licensure, certification, and compliance with organizational policies.
- Consistently adhere to safety precautions and ergonomic techniques.

Education & Experience
- Completion of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies from an accredited program.
- Current Indiana licensure and certification as a Physician Assistant.
- Comprehensive understanding of medical care practices and procedures.
- Strong analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Working Conditions
- Operate in both clinical and hospital settings with occasional exposure to biohazards.
Physical Demands
- Requires visual and manual dexterity, along with the physical capability to meet the job’s essential functions.
