Description
The Advanced Practice Practitioner (APP) is a member of a multidisciplinary team responsible for the evaluation and treatment of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery patients. Utilizing advanced knowledge and clinical expertise, the APP acts as a clinician, coordinator, consultant, and educator.
Examples of Duties
I. Clinical 80% A. Coordinates delivery of care for patients seen in the hospital with physicians and other health care professionals. B. Utilizes physical assessment and data evaluation skills to assess patient status, and documents findings and treatment plans. C. Documents and communicates to physicians the needs of patients and family members. D. Participates in, plans, develops, organizes and evaluates the programs and protocols in Otolaryngology- Head and neck Surgery for continuity of care. E. Assists in the formulation of plan of care with physicians and other health care professionals. Plans, implements, documents, and evaluates interventions based on assessed needs. F. Facilitates continuity of care through the referral of patients and contacts the referring physicians via appropriate electronic and print methods. G. Acts as a patient and family advocate, and utilizes problem solving techniques. H. Rounds on hospitalized patients in order to assure the current care and transition of patients between hospital, home and outpatient care. I. Responds appropriately in emergency situations including presence in Emergency Department, general hospital floor and ICUs. J. One weekend a month, rounding, note writing, possible bedside procedures (ex. dressing changes, trach changes, flexible laryngoscopy, etc.) K. Attend multi-disciplinary conferences related to patient care. L. Reports actual or potential risk management situations utilizing the hospital notification system. M. Performs procedures as instructed by the surgeon in the clinic and in the hospital as designated by hospital privileges. II. Patient Education 10% A. Provides patient and family education based on assessed need regarding the diagnosis, treatment, protocols and diagnostic testing in the area of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery. B. Teaches patients and family members regarding post – ICU, post – hospitalization, and post operative care. C. Develops, reviews, and evaluates a wide range of patient educational materials related to the area of health relating to Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. D. Provides and participates in professional educational activities related to Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery patients. III. Research 5% A. Applies a scientific process to advance the service provided to patients. B. Assist patients in participation in Research Study protocols, as appropriate. C. Remain apprised of updated literature in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery as it applies to patient care. D. Participates with nursing and other colleagues in the publication of approved research findings IV. Administration 5% A. Advise in the development of standards and policies regarding patient care through participation on appropriate committees. B. Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for own professional status. C. Promotes positive interpersonal relationships and demonstrates effective communication methods

I. Certified Physician Assistant A. Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program B. Received a passing score on the national certifying exam C. Licensure as a Physician Assistant in the State of Illinois (or eligibility for licensure) D. Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations II. Certified Nurse Practitioner A. Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program B. Received passing score on National certifying exam C.
