Day in the Life
Our busy Orthopeadic practice with two locations in Oak Lawn and Orland Park, IL has an immediate need for a Physician Assistant for our Sports Medicine team. The PA-C will be utilized in both the clinic and OR, working alongside an experienced Orthopaedic surgeon. Experienced candidates are preferred but the surgeon is willing to train new graduates with a passion for orthopedics. This position has NO CALL responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Function as first assistant in the operating room including performing surgical exposure, surgical dissections, layer closure of wounds, harvesting of autologous graft materials, application of immobilization devices and splints.
- Assist with use of monitoring devices, including radiographic equipment.
- Writing post-op notes and orders.
- Participates in initial evaluation and longitudinal care of outpatients.
- Obtain medical history and perform physical examination.
- Develop and implement plan of care with attending supervision.
- Complete appropriate documentation of all evaluations, care, and services rendered.
- Make appropriate referral for consultations.
- Provide pre- and post-operative patient education to patients and their families.
- Respond to telephone inquiries of patients and provide appropriate medical care, referral for consultation or counseling.
- Communicate with referring or primary care physicians regarding patient care and treatment. Provide follow-up and health maintenance care including the appropriate adjustment of medications in response to specific instructions from the Attending Physician.
- Prescription of medications to accomplish the plan of treatment, within the scope of the supervising physician’s written delegated prescriptive authority, as defined in Article II of the Illinois Controlled Substances Act, and the Physician Assistant Practice Act of 1987.
- Participate in rounding on inpatient and documentation of medical plan every 6 weeks.
- Participate in our Ortho Urgent Care 2x a month.
- Participate in game coverage/sporting events.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Physician Assistant Degree (Bachelor’s or Masters of Science).
- Completion of an accredited physician assistant program by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).
- Certification by NCCPA.
- Licensure as a Physician Assistant in the State of Illinois.
- Federal DEA and Illinois mid-level practitioner controlled substance license.
- Advanced cardiac life support (ACLS).
- Participate in department lectures and ongoing CME – earning and logging 100 hours of CME per 2-year cycle in accordance with National Commission of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) requirements.
- Read assignments as directed by supervising physician.
- Teach other providers as appropriate for level of experience.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands:
- This position requires standing and walking for long periods of time with some sitting behind computer.
- Requires manual and finger dexterity and vision corrected to normal range.
- Lifting up to or assisting with weight up to 50lbs
- Travels between both locations Oak Lawn, Orland Park on clinic days and assigned surgery centers and hospitals for days in surgery.
