Job Summary
In collaboration with a licensed gastroenterology (GI) physician, the Physician Assistant provides exceptional care to a diverse patient population with gastrointestinal diseases across Cook County Health (CCH) Ambulatory clinics and hospital sites Promotes wellness and health maintenance by performing comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic medical services by managing patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and other gastroenterology pathologies. Develops and implements patient management plans in providing continuity of care, both in person and over a telehealth platform. Maintains professional and technical knowledge through continued educational programs and workshops supporting emerging healthcare trends with a focus on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and other gastrointestinal disorders. Performs duties within the legal guidelines of the CCH policies.
Typical Duties

Works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, using advanced clinical skills to manage a caseload of patients with inflammatory bowel disease and various gastrointestinal pathologies.

Performs the assessment, diagnosis, initiation of delegated medical treatments, independent nursing interventions and evaluation of care.

Provides a model of care that is shaped by theory, expanded by science, research and reflective practice, and is identified by a holistic and comprehensive approach to the patients.

Provides support and follow up to Inflammatory Bowel Disease patients in the outpatient setting.

May be trained and may be responsible for performing certain diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures for the outpatient setting.

Provide continuity to manage the infusion appointments for specialty medications and ensure compliance and follow ups.

Demonstrates ability to appropriately perform telephone triage regarding patient concerns and complaints, with appropriate communication.

Conducts comprehensive or episodic health assessment of patients, gathering pertinent information in a systematic manner from varied sources.

Differentiates normal and abnormal variations in organ systems.

Analyzes all sources of data, establishes a medical/nursing diagnosis initiates and evaluates diagnostic studies, monitors therapeutic procedures and the patient’s response to therapy.

Formulates a plan of care in collaboration with patients, family members, physicians, and other members of the health care team.

Upholds standards of care for comprehensive treatment of patients with inflammatory bowel disease

Completes consultation and appropriate risk identification for colon cancer screening

Monitors GI diseases and other co-morbid conditions and incorporates assessment findings into plan of care.

Provides anticipatory guidance to patients and their families about the course of therapeutic options available.

Performs, interprets, monitors and communicates results of diagnostic tests.

Counseling patients concerning lifestyle modifications, medication regimens, side effects and interactions using an appropriate psychosocial communication level.

Recognizes an emergency situation and initiates appropriate emergency care.

Identifies complications requiring collaboration and consultation, initiating appropriate action.

Promotes, has knowledge of, and utilizes appropriate patient care protocols that relate to the physiological and psychological needs of GI and Inflammatory Bowel Disease patients.

Schedules follow-up visits to appropriately monitor patients, progression of disease and their response to therapy.

Establishes appropriate priorities of care.

Evaluates goals and outcomes considering the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.

Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient’s plan of care.

Manages infusion patients (compliance, follow up, call backs, trough levels), and assists in follow up on pathology generated from endoscopy biopsies (telehealth visits)

Works at various sites as assigned by Chair of the Division of Gastroenterology including Ambulatory clinics, Stroger and Provident hospital.

Performs other duties as delegated by the Chair of the Division of Gastroenterology
Minimum Qualifications
- Successful completion of a Physician Assistant Program accredited by the Accreditation and Review Commission on Education for the Physician assistant (ARC-PA) or proof of completion of ARC-PA program two (2) weeks prior to hire date
- Completion and maintenance of certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)two (2) weeks prior to hire date
- Current valid State of Illinois Physician Assistant License two (2) weeks prior to hire date.
- Current valid Illinois Controlled Substances License (ILCS) or ability to obtain license 6 months prior to starting employment
- Valid licensure with the Federal DEA or ability to obtain license 6 months prior to starting employment
- Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Preferred Qualifications
- One (1) year of experience as a Physician Assistant working in a Gastroenterology practice or with IBD patients
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
- Knowledge of proper hand hygiene and hand washing techniques
- Knowledge of infectious control policies and procedures
- Thorough knowledge of Physician Assistant practices and principles and the ability to apply them in a clinical setting.
- Excellent Physician Assistant clinical and technical skills
- Knowledge and skill to perform mathematical accuracy in measuring and dispensing medication
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate with all levels of staff and a patient population composed of diverse cultures and age groups
- Strong customer service and empathy skills
- Demonstrates good computer and typing skills
- Demonstrate good phone and email etiquette skills with strong response times
- Demonstrate analytical and organizational, problem-solving, critical thinking, and conflict management/resolution skills
- Demonstrate attention to detail, accuracy and precision
- Ability to effectively communicate while maintaining HIPPA for PHI
- Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines in a fast paced and stressful environment
- Ability to adhere to department policies and standards utilizing best practices
- Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and composure when challenged
- Ability to function autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Ability to see and hear clearly (including with correction)
- Ability to tolerate exposure to unpleasant noise, odor and temperature
Physical and Environmental Demands
This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements. This includes but is not limited to the following policies and procedures: complying with Personal Protective Equipment requirements, hand washing and sanitizing practices, complying with department specific engineering and work practice controls and any other work area safety precautions as specified by hospital wide policy and departmental procedures.
