Join the University of Chicago Medicine as an Advanced Practice Provider – MICU Rotational
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides comprehensive critical care across the Medical ICU in a 24/7 rotational model. This role includes primary management of MICU patients, participation in the procedure service, oncology critical care consults, and coverage of an expanded MICU service.
Our Medical ICU clinical team has expertise in the management of many Critically ill patients including:
- Respiratory Failure: ARDS, COPD, Asthma
- Shock: Septic shock, hypovolemic shock, cardiogenic shock
- Hepatic failure – GI bleed
- Renal failure and metabolic altered mental status

MICU Primary Team / House Staff
- Provide direct management of critically ill patients in the MICU
- Perform admissions, daily management, and coordination of care
- Collaborate closely with attending physicians, fellows, and multidisciplinary teams
Participating in rounds, handoffs, and escalation of care
Expanded MICU Coverage (6 Additional Beds)
- Provide continuous 24/7 coverage for an additional MICU service
- Function with a mix of autonomy and collaboration depending on census and acuity
Ensure continuity of care across shifts with structured handoffs
Procedure Service
- Rotate through and perform bedside procedures including lumbar puncture, PICC placement, paracentesis, and thoracentesis
Maintain procedural competency and volume expectations
Oncology Critical Care Consults
- Respond to and manage ICU-level consults for oncology patients
Partner with oncology and ICU teams for escalation and co-management
Schedule & Expectations
- Rotating day and night shifts (24/7 model)
- Weekends and holidays required
- Shared accountability for coverage across all service lines
Expected flexibility based on census and operational needs
Nurse Practitioner Job Summary:
The Nurse Practitioner is an advanced practice nurse responsible for comprehensive direct patient care management. The Nurse Practitioner manages a caseload of patients and exercises autonomous decision making in the assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of delegated medical treatments. The scope of practice also includes family support, teaching, staff education, consultation, and research.
Advanced Practice Nurse: Provide comprehensive care to patients in the Medical Intensive Care Unit or inpatient units cared for by the Medical ICU service at the University of Chicago. Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, using advanced clinical skills to manage a caseload of patients. Assess, diagnose, initiate delegated medical treatments, perform independent nursing interventions, and evaluate care. Provide a model of care that is shaped by theory, expanded by science, research and reflective practice and is identified by a holistic and comprehensive approach to the patients.
Nurse Practitioner – Education and Experience Requirements:
- Advanced degree (or equivalent, if license received prior to July 1, 2001) from an accredited school/college of nursing required.
- Ability to obtain Illinois advanced practice nurse (APN) license by start date required.
- Current license as a Registered Nurse required.
- AANC certification as an ACNP and/or ANP-BC required.
Minimum two years of critical care clinical nursing experience with demonstrated clinical competence in patient care, teaching and management of patients with critical illness, and knowledge about clinical aspects of critical care including protocol therapy preferred.
Physician Assistant Required Qualifications
- Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant Master’s program
- Current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois PA licensure / registration
- Must have or be able to qualify for Illinois and DEA prescribing numbers
- Must have AGACNP certification but FNP or ANP will be considered with relevant experience as a PA or NP.
Current BLS/ACLS certification
