Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner

POSITION: Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner/RN

RESPONSIBLE TO: Surgeon

JOB SUMMARY: Provide professional patient care in the office and operating suite, conduct pre-operative patient education, lead and train clinical staff, including performing procedures such as biopsy, lesion removal, sclerotherapy, laser treatments, etc. and participate in marketing programs.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • PA or NP degree required
  • Current state licensure maintained
  • Training in plastic surgery a plus

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • At least two years of experience in a surgeon office or hospital
  • Ability to make independent decisions about patient care
  • Knowledgeable about PA/NP billing requirements
  • Some business management experience preferred
  • Experience assisting surgeon in surgery
  • Experience diagnosing and treating patients and an understanding of cosmetic procedures
  • Comfortable using email Internet applications
  • Knowledge of practice management and word processing software (specify)
  • Pleasant speaking voice and demeanor
  • Good communication skills with physicians and patients
  • Neat, professional appearance

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Patient Care

  • Reviews lab results and x-rays prior to entering patient exam room; follows up on all pathology, operative and lab reports sent from the office and operating room
  • Takes patient history, and records the information in the patient’s chart
  • Confers with surgeon about new patient findings and potential diagnosis and treatment before they see each patient
  • Accompanies surgeon in cosmetic consultations as needed
  • Maintains own schedule, and sees complimentary cosmetic consultations and group consultations
  • Performs procedures as directed by the surgeon
  • Reviews pre-operative instructions and explains the surgical process to patients who are about to have surgery
  • Performs pre-operative H&P for cosmetic patients and provides information to surgeon
  • Triages postoperative patient phone calls; answers questions and determines if patients need to come in
  • Sees post-operative patients and answers questions; does suture and drain removal for these patients
  • Obtains needed equipment and supplies for exam room procedures such as sclerotherapy, collagen, injectables, lesion removal
  • Orders medications and treatments in accordance with surgeon protocols
  • Formulates and updates patient care plans; consults with surgeons as needed
  • Orders pre-operative tests as needed
  • Performs patient education duties; shows surgical videos, hands out brochures, and directs patients to specific Internet sites for more information
  • Prepares of exam rooms, including re-stocking of treatment areas
  • Acts as backup for Patient Coordinator

Hospital

  • Assists surgeon in the operating room as needed
  • Adheres to chart documentation requirements as outlined by hospital or practice guidelines
  • Makes rounds on behalf of surgeon
  • Functions as a patient advocate

Marketing

  • Works with surgeon and Patient Coordinator to design marketing programs
  • Creates presentations that support the surgeon and the practice and offers them to local community organizations, women’s groups, spas, etc.
  • Accompanies surgeon at patient seminars; speaks with potential patients about surgery
  • Takes patient before and after photographs and maintains photoarchives. Assists surgeon with selection of before-and-after photos for photo books

Other

  • Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations
  • Conducts educational seminars for patients, and in-services for staff; cross-trains staff in the office
  • Updates all clinical policies and procedures and maintains gel studies for breast implants
  • Maintains patient confidentiality by following the HIPAA Compliance Plan established by the practice; releases PHI in accordance with the practice’s HIPAA Compliance Plan, attends regular HIPAA training, maintains data security by refusing to share computer and other passwords, and reports all identified and suspected HIPAA violations to the Privacy Officer
  • Maintains the coding compliance standards set by the practice; understands the practice’s Coding Compliance Plan, attends annual training, and reports all identified and suspected coding compliance violations to the Compliance Officer
  • Maintains detailed knowledge of practice management and other computer software as it relates to job functions
  • Attends annual CPR, OSHA, and CLIA training programs
  • Attends all regular meetings
  • Performs all other tasks and projects assigned by the surgeons

Access to PHI (Protected Health Information)

This position has extensive access to PHI. It requires the review of computerized or paper-based medical records, lab results, and tests, in order to perform clinical duties as well as communicate effectively with patients. It may also require access to computerized and paper-based reimbursement data (such as referral forms)¾which contain both a patient’s clinical and financial information.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This job may have supervisory responsibilities over the clinical staff.

Typical Physical Demands

Position requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, as well as manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Involves standing and walking. Employee will occasionally be asked to lift and carry items weighing up to 30 pounds. Normal visual acuity and hearing are required. Employee will work under stressful conditions, and work irregular hours. Employee will be exposed to bodily fluids on a regular basis.

Typical Working Conditions

Employee will have frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinical environment.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $115,000.00 – $135,000.00 per year
