GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: The Physician Assistant (PA) provides routine care and management of the patient with acute and chronic complaints, in collaboration with the supervising physician and through implementation of standardized procedures. PA’s practice in accordance with the state laws as defined by the Georgia Composite Medical Board.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Administrative supervision is provided by the Practice Administrator.
Clinical supervision is provided by Philip Ploska, MD and Stephen Rayappa, MD. Other mechanisms of clinical supervision used may be:
1. Direct on-site or phone supervision by a supervising physician.
2. Chart screens on random charts by the supervising physician or designee.
3. Chart audits on random charts as an integral part of selected Quality Improvement programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Performs duties related to Physician Assistant guidelines, including patient care and patient/family education.
2. Serves as an orthopedic team member working closely with physicians and other staff to ensure the health of the patients.
3. Oversees the medical care of patients in collaboration with the physician.
4. Practices in accordance with state laws as defined by the Georgia Composite Medical Board.
5. Evaluates and treats patients with acute and chronic complaints related to orthopedics, according to standardized procedures.
6. Obtains comprehensive histories and performs pertinent physical exams with assessment of normal and abnormal findings on new patients.
7. Obtains interval histories and performs pertinent examinations on return patients.
8. Performs or requests and evaluates diagnostic studies as indicated upon evaluation of the patient according to standardized procedures.
9. Orders and furnishes medications according to standardized procedures and acquires counter-signature on prescriptions from the supervising physician for medications not included in the approval formulary.
10. Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures after demonstrated competency and according to written standardized procedures where applicable.
11. Assist in surgery to include but not limited to first assist, deep and superficial closures, application of appliances and any other action delegated by the surgeon.
12. Conduct hospital rounds, write orders, and take call for the practice. Evaluated and clarify clinical conditions, formulate and implement a treatment plan or therapeutic plan for hospitalized patients, dictate discharge summaries, histories and physicals.
13. Recognizes situations which require the immediate attention of a physician, and initiates life-saving procedures when necessary.
14. May refer patients to physician for consultation or to specialized health resources for treatment.
EDUCATION: Licensed as a Physician Assistant in the state of Georgia and current Georgia Physician Assistant Certification. Successful completion of a Master’s program in Physician Assisting.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum of two years’ experience as a Physician Assistant, preferably in an orthopedic healthcare environment.
REQUIREMENTS: Current state PA license. Certification by state as a Physician Assistant.
KNOWLEDGE:
1. Knowledge of Physician Assistant standards of practice in the orthopedic specialty.
2. Knowledge of methods ensuring safe working environment for patient, family, and staff including using appropriate personal protection equipment.
3. Knowledge of theories of family dynamics, mother-child attachment, parenting and learning adult learning concepts.
SKILLS:
1. Skill in observation, assessment, examination and treatment of women according to current standards of care and accepted guidelines.
2. Skill in implementation of selected guidelines when the diagnosis is clear and has a predictable outcome.
3. Skill in implementation of selected guideline to establish a diagnosis when a problem occurs, e.g. anemia work-up.
4. Skill to consult a physician when deviations from the norm develop which are not covered by these guidelines.
ABILITIES:
1. Ability to maintain the confidentiality of patient information.
2. Ability to assess a situation, consider alternatives and choose an appropriate course of action.
3. Ability to participate effectively as a team member by supporting change, decisions and other staff, and by managing conflict appropriately.
ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:
Combination of office and exam room. Frequent exposure to communicable disease, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:
Varied activities including sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching and lifting. Required full range of body motion including manual finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Must be able to lift 30 pounds regularly, up to 50 pounds occasionally. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Occasional stress related to multiple responsibilities, patient problems and unfortunate outcomes, and to working irregular hours.
