About the practice
Hair Medicine Institute is a boutique direct-pay hair restoration practice in Alpharetta, founded and led by Dr. Spencer Hawkins — the only ISHRS fellowship-trained hair restoration surgeon in Georgia, dual board-certified in dermatology and Mohs micrographic surgery. We practice a Medical First philosophy: maximizing evidence-based pharmacotherapy and regenerative treatments before surgical intervention, and never operating on patients whose medical foundation isn’t in place. Our patients come to us specifically for credentialed, ethical, outcome-driven care.
We are looking for our second physician assistant to grow with the practice.
The role
This is a hair restoration apprenticeship structured around a residency model. You will see patients in collaboration with Dr. Hawkins — initially shadowing, then performing structured intakes, and eventually carrying your own consult panel with every patient staffed by Dr. Hawkins. Over time, you will train in FUE hair transplant extraction and assist in the operating room.
What you’ll do:
- Perform comprehensive hair loss intakes — history, scalp examination, photo documentation, trichoscopy, baseline assessment
- Present patients to Dr. Hawkins and participate in diagnostic and treatment planning conversations
- Deliver patient education on medical therapy, regenerative treatments, and surgical options
- Manage prescription workflows, follow-up care, and the longitudinal medical relationship
- Provide concierge-level patient experience — every patient is a relationship, not a transaction
- Assist in hair transplant procedures; train in FUE extraction technique under direct supervision
- Contribute to clinical protocols, patient education materials, and practice development
Training structure:
The first three months are a structured shadowing period — you observe consults, learn diagnostic patterns in alopecia (AGA, alopecia areata, scarring alopecias), learn HMI’s clinical protocols, and gradually take on intake responsibilities. After three months, you will begin carrying consults in a residency model where you see the patient first, present to Dr. Hawkins, and we deliver the plan together. Surgical training (FUE extraction) begins after the consult model is established — typically in the second six months of employment.
This is not a role where you’ll be left to figure things out alone. Every patient is staffed. You will be mentored directly by a fellowship-trained surgeon, in a small practice where you’ll learn the full breadth of hair medicine — from medical therapy through regenerative procedures through surgical assist.
Who we’re looking for
- PA-C eligible or licensed in Georgia (new graduates strongly encouraged)
- Genuine interest in hair restoration, dermatology, or surgical specialties
- Precise, detail-oriented temperament — comfortable with checklists, verification, and structured workflows
- Excellent patient communication; warm, professional, calm
- Interested in growing with a boutique practice rather than a high-volume clinic
- Comfortable with the part-time structure and the trajectory it implies
Not required but valued:
- Prior dermatology or surgical experience
- Photography or clinical imaging experience
- Interest in research, publication, or clinical protocol development
Compensation & logistics
- Salaried, at Atlanta-area market rate for hair restoration / specialty dermatology PAs
- W-2 employment
- Malpractice coverage provided with tail
- Part-time (two days per week) with potential to grow as the practice expands
- This role suits PAs with a second part-time position, a working spouse, or a primary preference for boutique specialty work over full-time volume practice
