Job Summary:

The Physician Assistant for Neurosurgery interviews patients, takes medical histories, performs physical examinations, orders diagnostic tests, prescribes appropriate treatment and assists during complicated medical procedures. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a physician. The Physician Assistant assists for neurosurgical procedures or surgeries and provides postoperative care. The Physician Assistant participates in clinical rounds on patients that are admitted to the hospital.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • First assist in adult neurosurgery.
  • Partners with medical and clinical staff to implement and hardwire evidence-based practices.
  • Performs history and physical (to be countersigned by physician within 24 hours).
  • Collects data and documents for physician review.
  • Assist in the management of acute medical emergencies in the presence of the sponsoring physician.
  • Familiar with professional association recommendations with clinical practice and serves as a resource for the clinical team.
  • Cultivates and sustains a culture of innovation, continual learning and accountability.
  • Performs invasive procedures as designated by the medical staff privileges and credentialing process Performs venous puncture, arterial puncture, urinary bladder catheterization, gastric lavage, taking of cultures, injections and EKG tracings.
  • Participates in patient care rounds.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

Experience

  • Generally requires 3 to 5 years of related experience.

Education

  • Advanced degree in specialty is required.

Credentials

  • Valid Florida Physician Assistant license and DEA board certification are required.
  • Other specialty certifications related to specialty are a plus.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.
