Summary

The APP PA Supervisor for Cardio-Vascular Thoracic (CVT) specialty is responsible for overseeing and managing the daily operations, staffing, and resource allocation of the specialized CVT Physician Assistant team. This highly specialized leadership role ensures the efficient functioning of the team while maintaining high standards of patient care, operational excellence, and adherence to established clinical protocols. The incumbent works collaboratively with perioperative, hospital, and physician leadership to enhance surgical processes, optimize resources, and improve the quality of care and patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • In charge of scheduling daily operating room staffing for CVT PAs and creating on-call schedules to ensure appropriate coverage.
  • Work with all CVT Surgical APPs and PA’s on scope assignments to maximize functionality and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with the Pediatric CVT team to ensure appropriate coverage and backup support.
  • Manage Kronos and team schedules to ensure accurate timekeeping and resource allocation.
  • Ensure appropriate resources are available to meet the surgical case load and optimize workflows.
  • Collaborate with the OR Nurse Managers and OR leadership to improve OR efficiency within CVT surgical rooms.
  • Work with perioperative, hospital, and physician leadership on process improvement initiatives to improve workflows and patient care.
  • Manage productivity, premium pay, and resource utilization for the assigned team to minimize unnecessary costs to the organization.
  • Ensure patients are optimized for surgery, including preoperative and postoperative care.
  • Participate in case reviews to identify opportunities for improvement in care quality, efficiency, and the overall patient experience.
  • Assist in managing acute medical emergencies, critical care interventions, and surgical procedures in collaboration with the sponsoring physician.
  • Oversee the performance and training of CVT PAs, ensuring adherence to clinical protocols and CARE values: Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Expertise.
  • Perform as First Assist in adult and pediatric thoracic surgery, including robotic procedures and lung transplantation.
  • Perform critical care procedures such as ECMO evaluation, cannulation, and management, tracheostomies, insertion of chest tubes, and pacing wires in the presence of a sponsoring physician.
  • Conduct venous punctures, arterial punctures, nasogastric intubation, injections, and EKG tracings as needed.
  • Assist with patient care rounds, consults, admissions, and discharge documentation.
  • Foster a collaborative team environment focused on excellence, accountability, and professional development.
  • Serve as a liaison between CVT PAs and hospital leadership to address challenges, implement solutions, and drive operational improvements.
  • Lead and mentor team members to promote growth, competency, and alignment with organizational goals.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Experience

Generally requires 5 to 7 years of related experience.

Education

Advanced degree in specialty is required.

Skill

Credentials

Valid Florida Physician Assistant license and DEA board certification are required. Required certification by National Commission of Certified Physician Assistants. Other specialty certifications related to specialty required, as needed based on specialty. American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment. PALS is required for APP’s/ PA’s performing pediatric procedures.

Physical Requirements – Job function requires extended standing or walking. Must be able to carry objects weighing 21 to 50 pounds. Able to lift or move objects weighing 51 to 100 pounds with the use of appropriate devices. Jobs in this group require frequent visual acuity to perform activities related to extended use of computers. May also be exposed to needle sticks, airborne infections, medical gases, X-Ray, chemical exposures and other potential hazards. Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when exposed to infectious/clinical hospital environment.
