Physician Assistant – PRN Surgical First Assist (Orthopedics)

Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated and dependable Physician Assistant to join our team as a PRN Surgical First Assistant. This is an excellent opportunity for a Physician Assistant interested in gaining hands-on experience in orthopedic surgery while working directly alongside two fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons in a supportive, educational environment.

This flexible, as-needed (1099 Independent Contractor) position is ideal for both recent graduates with a passion for surgery and experienced Physician Assistants seeking supplemental surgical opportunities. Cases are performed at hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers throughout Broward County.

Duties

• Serve as Surgical First Assistant during elective orthopedic procedures
• Assist with patient positioning and surgical preparation
• Maintain the sterile field throughout procedures
• Provide surgical exposure and soft tissue retraction (with the surgeon’s guidance)
• Assist with instrumentation and hemostasis
• Perform wound closure as delegated by the operating surgeon
• Apply dressings and splints when appropriate
• Assist with efficient operating room workflow
• Maintain professionalism while providing exceptional patient care throughout the perioperative experience
• Communicate effectively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, nursing staff, and operating room personnel

We value teaching and mentorship. Physician Assistants will receive direct guidance from the operating surgeons, with opportunities to progressively develop their surgical first assist skills.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program
• Current Florida Physician Assistant license (or eligibility to obtain one)
• NCCPA Certification (or eligible if newly graduated, as permitted by Florida law)
• Current BLS Certification
• Professional demeanor with excellent communication skills
• Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to learn
• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, team-oriented surgical environment
• Prefer PAs who are currently out of network with most commercial insurance carriers.

Preferred Qualifications

• Interest in orthopedic surgery
• Prior operating room exposure or completion of a surgical rotation during PA training
• Previous surgical first assist experience is welcomed but not required
• New graduates are encouraged to apply.
• Out of network with most commercial insurance carriers.

Schedule

• As needed (this would be based on your availability. You may only be needed for 2-6 surgical days a month, depending on the schedule).
• Flexible scheduling
• Elective orthopedic surgical cases; occasional call cases if you are available.
• No minimum case commitment
• Contractors may accept or decline assignments based on availability

Compensation

• $500 flat rate per surgical day, covering up to 8 hours from the contractor’s scheduled arrival time at the assigned surgical facility.
• While compensation is based on an 8-hour surgical day, many assignments are anticipated to require substantially less time. Contractors will still receive the full $500 day rate when cases conclude earlier.
• If surgical responsibilities extend beyond 8 hours, additional compensation will be paid at $100 per hour, prorated in 15-minute increments.
• Discretionary performance-based bonuses may be awarded as the practice continues to grow.

Independent Contractor Status

This position is offered as a 1099 Independent Contractor opportunity. Independent contractors are responsible for maintaining all required professional licenses and certifications and for meeting all applicable tax obligations. This position does not include traditional employee benefits.
