Job Summary
The Research Clinician is a provider (licensed physician’s assistant) who supports clinical research across multiple studies, conducting clinical work across a range of studies and trials. The role provides medical evaluations and related clinical services for multiple clinical research studies. The amount of time spent in research is dependent on the needs of the research department and funded support.
Role Specific Primary Essential Duties – Research:
- May serve as a Sub-Investigator on clinical trials, as needed
- Performs physical exams and study-related procedures per study protocols and documents in appropriate source documentation.
- Provide high-quality care, including medical status assessments, provision of diagnostic, therapeutic, and clinical procedures, and prescription and monitoring of medications in accordance with study protocols and relevant standards of care.
- Determines the relevance of health care issues related to the study and makes referrals as appropriate.
- Working with protocol Principal Investigator and other Sub-Investigators determines patient eligibility for enrollment in clinical trials.
- Reviews lab results, medical histories, and monitors adverse events, and documents in appropriate trial records.
- Serves as a resource for clinical questions for study coordinators that have about participants.
- Accurately and completely documents assessment, treatment, and other interventions in the client’s research in a timely and accurate manner. Ensure ordering, safe storage, dispensing, and documentation according to Good Clinical Practice Guidelines and Regulations.
- Educates and counsels research clients regarding referrals and treatment.
- Respond to research clients’ emergency medical calls.
- Supports the reporting of all Serious Adverse Events to NIH, the DSMB, and various IRBs, as needed
- Perform regulatory quality control activities, which may include study drug log audits and temperature log monitoring.
- Ensuring clinical and research staff compliance with all laws, policies, protocols, and operating procedures
- Developing, conducting training, and supervising staff on clinical protocols and procedures and ensures active compliance with all relevant regulatory standards for clinical research
- Performing clinical duties across research studies
Management Responsibilities
- Provides training and supervision of research staff on clinical policies and procedures in collaboration with Research Department operational staff.

- Excellent scientific writing skills (i.e., grants, manuscripts)
- Excellent ability to prepare and deliver research presentations to multiple audiences
- Excellent knowledge of primary care guidelines and standards of care
- Excellent clinical and communication skills
- Excellent ability to mentor students and early career professionals in medicine, clinical research, and public health, with in-depth knowledge of clinical research methods as applied to their areas of expertise
- Strong commitment to patient-centered clinical care
- Ability to demonstrate cultural humility while providing medical services to a diverse client population
- Extensive knowledge of research methods
- Ability to develop research protocols
- Ability to develop quantitative and/or qualitative analytic plans and work closely with internal and external partners in executing and interpreting such analyses
- Commitment to community-engaged research approaches
- Knowledge of clinical, social/behavioral, or public health approaches to health equity research
- Knowledge of local, state and federal regulations as they relate to health care
Education and Experience Required
- Active license to practice medicine in Washington, DC. required
- DC DEA Certification required
- DC Controlled Substance License required
- Active CPR/BLS certification required.
- At least 1 years of clinical or clinical research experience required
- Research or clinical experience with a focus on the health of LGBTQ+ populations broadly construed (e.g., aging, cancer, cardiovascular disease, mental health, sexual health) and/or HIV treatment and prevention required
- Demonstrated commitment to research to achieve health equity required
- Able to manage and delegate work in a fast-paced clinical research environment required
