Physician Assistant – Orthopedics: Full Time Pay Range: $119,549 – $191,279 With over 150 years of caring for our community and each other in the Washington, D.C. area, Howard University Hospital has a world-renowned reputation for high-quality, patient-centric care. The Orthopedic PA is a critical member of the orthopedic surgery team at Howard University Hospital, a teaching hospital, and a Level 1 Trauma Center. This position involves providing direct patient care in a high-volume setting, assisting in surgical procedures, and participating in the training of medical students and residents. The Orthopedic PA will work collaboratively with supervising orthopedic surgeons, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals to deliver the highest standard of care to patients with acute and chronic musculoskeletal issues. The Orthopedic PA:

  • Support outpatient clinic, with a minimum of 3 half-day sessions per week. Conduct comprehensive and problem-focused histories and physical examinations. Diagnose and treat orthopedic conditions in both the emergency and clinic settings. Order and interpret diagnostic tests such as X-rays, MRI, and CT scans. Participate in call schedule with other orthopedic physician assistants and faculty.
  • Assist in surgical procedures, providing aid in exposure, hemostasis, and other intraoperative technical functions that help surgeons carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.
  • Manage the orthopedic physician assistant schedules. Ensure Orthopedic call coverage is appropriately distributed.
  • Manage pre-operative and post-operative care, including wound management and postoperative follow-up in the clinic and hospital settings.
  • Participate actively in the trauma team when orthopedic injuries are involved, providing urgent care and stabilization.
  • Instruct and supervise medical students and residents on orthopedic rotation, sharing practical knowledge and clinical skills.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records, documenting all patient interactions, treatments, and procedures according to hospital policy, legal requirements, and Howard University Hospital medical staff bylaws.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient outcomes and optimizing orthopedic service efficiency. Support Operating Room performance initiatives including First Case On Time start time, Case Length, Turnaround Time, etc. Support optimization of Orthopedic Trauma operating room throughput. Support oversight of Orthopedic patient Length of Stay management.
  • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and are not to be considered all-inclusive.

Minimum Requirements Include:

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Licensed to practice as a PA in Washington, DC.
  • Previous experience in orthopedics is highly preferred, especially in a trauma center.
  • BLS Certification required
  • ACLS Certification required
