Full Job Description

Location : DC, Department of Correctional / DC Jail

INTRODUCTION

Under the supervision of the Medical Director, the Physician Assistant provides expanded care to patients by exercising independent judgment related to patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and counseling.

MAJOR DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Ÿ Provides preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic services to patients, under the supervision of a physician who shall, at minimum, have constant availability through electronic communication. Provides preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic services to patients

Ÿ Orders and interprets laboratory/radiology testing, as appropriate.

Ÿ Makes diagnoses and prescribes therapeutic measures of care, including prescribing and dispensing medications. All Rx issued by PA must bear the printed names of the PA and the supervising physician, although the PA alone may sign the Rx. PA may order controlled substances as long as they have a valid DEA license.

Ÿ May give medical orders to health professionals consistent with institutional policies. The PA may perform procedures and other tasks delegated by physician within that physician’s normal scope of practice.

Ÿ Provides teaching for health maintenance and specific health problems and develops/participates in screening programs.

Ÿ Makes appropriate referrals to specialists, 24-hour shelters, and hospitals.

Ÿ Recognizes and manages common acute and chronic illnesses within her/his scope of practice.

Ÿ Provides immediate emergency care as needed and makes arrangement for transport to appropriate hospital or health service when necessary.

Ÿ Ensures a supervising physician’s name is on all chart documents for which the PA provides care.

Ÿ Ensures a delegation agreement is provided to the DC Medical Board with a copy on file at the primary practice site.

Ÿ Ensures all orders and progress notes are countersigned by a supervising physician within ten (10) days.

Ÿ Collaborates, as needed, with social worker, medical-clerical assistant, and physician responsible for team regarding treatments, referrals, and follow-up care of patients.

Ÿ Conducts peer review and quality improvement activities on a regular basis.

Ÿ Attends meetings as assigned.

Ÿ Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ÿ Must have graduated from an accredited physician assistant program and pass NCCPA exam.

Ÿ Must maintain current DC PA License.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

Ÿ Preferably 2-3 years of experience in ambulatory care setting with some contact with homeless patients.

Ÿ Familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

This position reports directly to the Medical Director.

GUIDELINES

The position abides by all rules and regulations set forth by applicable licensing and regulatory bodies, as well as UHC policies and procedures.

This position has primary contact with the clients and employees of Unity Health Care.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

· Must be physically able to sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time. Must be able to bend, lift, and carry files from one location to another.

· Must have visual acuity and the ability to differentiate colors, and sustain long periods of computer usage.

· May sit for prolonged periods of time at a desk or in an automobile and/or may use the telephone for long periods of time.

· The office environment may be stressful with multiple, time-sensitive tasks to be accomplished within a short period of time.

· Must be able to work any time of the day, independently with minimal supervision, be capable of making sound business and decisions, and be detail oriented, alert, and self-motivated.

· Must be able to effectively manage difficult situations, staff, and customers.

· Must have the ability to work at a computer and analyze data.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Unity Health Care provides primary health care services to underserved patients in Washington, DC. As a federally qualified health center there is a commitment to serving traditionally underserved people in the community. Unity seeks to maintain facilities which are safe, sanitary, and serviceable.

RISKS

The position involves everyday risk and discomforts, which require normal safety precautions typical of such placesas offices, meetings, training rooms, and other UHC health Care Sites. The work area is adequately lit, heated, and ventilated. The position requires contact with staff at all levels throughout the organization. There are also external organization relationships that may be a part of the work of this individual. All medical services shall be provided according to medically accepted community standards of care. The employee shall provide evidence of a recent (within the past twelve (12) months) health assessment that includes a PPD and/or chest x-ray results.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $100,000.00 – $120,000.00 per year
