Full Job Description

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The PA will perform the following general functions during the course of any given day. Other duties may be assigned. Examines patient, performs comprehensive physical examination and compiles patient medical data, orders diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, and laboratory tests. Order and interpret MRI/diagnostic testing. Performs therapeutic procedures such as injections, casting, suturing and wound care, and managing infection. Records progress notes, and assists in provision of continuity of care.

All PAs are responsible to assure, on a daily basis, the specific duties and expectations as describe below. All time off must be approved by the PAs supervising physician. All PAs are responsible to provide any time off coverage as necessary. PAs are expected to work a five day schedule with time off provided for covering weekend call. Dictate patient discharge notes within 24 hours of discharge and sign off on all consults within 48 hours of service

RESPONSIBILITIES / WORK REQUIREMENTS:

Emergency Room

  • Respond to physician request to go to the ER
  • Respond to ER calls and attend to patients in the ER
  • Treat under the directions of physician to provide care

Surgery

  • First OR assist hospital and surgical center
  • Ensuring that the OR is set up for surgery (in the OR at 7:00am)
  • Be present for the beginning of cases
  • Always available to assist in surgery
  • Follow up call to postop patients within 24 hours

On-Call

  • Make hospital rounds on weekend days under the direction of physicians
  • Take hospital floor, Ortho floor phone calls and out-patient calls on weekend days & at night
  • Consult requests & patient calls will go through the physician who will triaging and instruct the PA On-Call of any needed work-up or follow-up.

Office

  • Office hours with physician and independent
  • Office hours are from 8:00am to end of physician day.
  • Work with individual physician to see physician’s patients
  • Interview, order x-rays, education, injections, apply/remove casts & bracing
  • See patients in the office with acute problems, review case with physician

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

EXPERIENCE

Orthopedic Experience Required

EDUCATION

Successful graduation from an accredited PA college or university program resulting in a PA certificate.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must have in good standing with a Connecticut state PA license. Conditional employment will be granted to recently graduates for the time between completion of school and the next available licensing test.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and color vision.
