Job Title: Orthopedic Physician Assistant
Job Overview: We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Orthopedic Surgical Physician Assistant (PA) to join our orthopedic team. The ideal candidate will assist in diagnosing, treating, and performing surgical interventions for musculoskeletal conditions. This role requires close collaboration with orthopedic surgeons, patients, and other healthcare professionals to provide exceptional patient care before, during, and after surgery.
Key Responsibilities:
- Preoperative Care:
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including medical history and physical examinations.
- Assist in developing preoperative care plans and educate patients about the surgical procedures and recovery expectations.
- Review and interpret diagnostic tests (X-rays, MRIs, CT scans) to help guide treatment decisions.
- Obtain informed consent from patients prior to surgery and provide clear explanations of the risks and benefits.
- Surgical Assistance:
- Assist orthopedic surgeon during surgical procedures, including positioning patients, providing instrumentation, and maintaining sterile fields.
- Perform minor surgical procedures, such as suturing, wound closure, and dressing application, under the supervision of the attending surgeon.
- Help with the management of surgical tools, equipment, and supplies during the surgery.
- Postoperative Care:
- Monitor patients post-surgery in recovery rooms and inpatient settings, ensuring proper recovery and addressing any immediate complications.
- Assist in postoperative evaluations, including follow-up visits, imaging assessments, and assessing patients’ pain and mobility.
- Provide wound care and management, ensuring proper healing and prevention of infection.
- Patient Education and Communication:
- Educate patients on postoperative care, including medication management, physical therapy, and activity restrictions.
- Answer questions and provide ongoing support to patients and their families about treatment plans, recovery, and potential outcomes.
- Communicate effectively with the healthcare team to update on patient progress and any changes in conditions.
- Administrative Duties:
- Document patient history, physical exams, surgical procedures, and follow-up care in the electronic health record (EHR) system.
- Assist in preparing surgical schedules, ensuring that all necessary materials, instruments, and personnel are available.
- Maintain accurate and timely patient records and ensure compliance with health regulations and standards.
- Collaboration and Teamwork:
- Work alongside orthopedic surgeons, nurses, physical therapists, and other healthcare professionals to provide multidisciplinary care.
- Participate in team meetings to discuss patient progress, complex cases, and potential treatment options.
- Ongoing Education and Professional Development:
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in orthopedic surgery and surgical techniques.
- Participate in continuing education opportunities, including workshops, conferences, and seminars, to enhance skills and knowledge.
Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
- State licensure to practice as a Physician Assistant in Colorado.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in orthopedic surgery or a related clinical field preferred.
- Strong knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy, pathology, and surgical techniques.
- Experience in assisting with orthopedic surgeries such as joint replacements, arthroscopy, fracture repairs, and soft tissue repairs.
- BLS and ACLS certification required.
Skills and Abilities:
- Proficiency in orthopedic surgical procedures and assisting with operations in the operating room.
- Ability to manage preoperative and postoperative care and provide appropriate patient education.
- Strong clinical and diagnostic skills, with attention to detail in patient care.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
- Ability to remain calm and composed under pressure, especially in surgical and emergency situations.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for long periods and assist with patient mobility.
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for surgical assistance.
- Physical stamina to handle the demands of surgery, patient care, and administrative tasks.
- Ability to lift and move patients when necessary.
Working Conditions:
- Full-time position with typical working hours of Monday through Friday.
- On-call availability for patient care may be required.
- Work environment includes clinic settings, operating rooms, ASC’s and hospital units.
- Occasional evening, weekend, and holiday work depending on surgical schedules.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $100,000.00 – $140,000.00 per year
