DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the Chief of Cardiology, responsible for the provision of patient care for Cardiac Cath Lab and the Cardiology/Interventional cardiac outpatient clinic. Provides advanced clinical and procedural assistance and support in treating and managing outpatients as part of the multidisciplinary cardiac team. Evaluates patients and performs history and physical, patient preparation, for procedures, and subsequent management. Solves complex clinical problems and communicates directly with the attending physician. Consultant and liaison for patients and families.
Provides teaching to patients, staff, and community organizations. Provides on-call coverage and on a sharing basis with IV fellows to be determined monthly. Effectively liaises with community physicians and referrals for expeditious patient care. Helps maintain departmental database and QA. Serves as a leader to residents and technical resource to clinic staff.
The Senior Physician Assistant is expected to practice consistently with professional standards of practice. Collaborative judgment with physician is expected to be exercised within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care. Under general supervision, the Senior PA performs operational level duties as described in the Series Concept. The primary emphasis of this position is direct patient care delivery. Assignments at this level primarily encompass management of patients who present chronic and/or episodichealth problems. Assignments at this level may include responsibility for occasional community teaching programs, participation in program planning and development of patient education information. May perform other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must be a graduate from a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).

Current California Physician Assistant (PA) license.

Current PA Certification from NCCPA.

Minimum two (2) years of full time experience as a licensed Physician Assistant (PA).

Demonstrated experience diagnosing and treating cardiology patients

Demonstrated critical thinking skills and experience independently solving problems and making recommendations.

Proficiency in documentation of patient conditions and outcomes.

Demonstrated strong computer skills and knowledge of PCIS/EPIC for retrieval of patient data (Computer skills required; PCIS/EPIC preferred).

Excellent organizational skills in order to rapidly prioritize activities in a high-volume, dynamic, multiple demand hospital setting.

Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with diverse population, including professional and non-professional staff. Demonstration of a high level of professionalism and excellent communication skills.

Demonstrated experience providing patient education and counseling and developing and implementing long and short range treatment plans. Comfortable in a group teaching setting.

Demonstrated experience performing diagnostic tests, exams, procedures (laboratory blood tests, FNA, punch biopsies, and excision biopsies) used in adult medicine. Knowledge of the purpose of these tests and infection control mechanisms.

Demonstrated experience performing initial history and physical examination; identifying major medical problems, and formulating appropriate plans of action.

Excellent clinical skills including experience in the evaluation and assessment of complex medical inpatients, including vital signs, fluid status, laboratory data, radiographic data; experience in formulating appropriate assessment and treatment plans; experience with bedside procedures including venous access, paracentesis, lumbar puncture and thoracentesis
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Prior hospitalist or inpatient medicine experience.

Demonstrated knowledge and ability to understand the medical as well as the psychosocial needs of a complex medical inpatient population.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
- Must be able to work various hours, days, shifts, on-call and locations based on the 24-hour Medical Center’s business needs.
- Employment is subject to pre-employment physical, background check, drug testing.
- Must be able to obtain UCSD medical staff privileges. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work experience.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $153,259 – $201,889 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $73.40 – $96.69
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
