Summary:
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) functions both independently and in collaboration with the supervising physician and Student Health Services Coordinator, to provide clinical services, health promotion, and health education programs to the campus community. This clinician provides health assessment, diagnosis, treatment, counseling and referral services. Services also include physicals and women’s health exams.
Examples of Duties:
- Assist the coordinator with the planning, development and implementation of campus health services program. Acts as the campus nurse when called upon, due to staffing needs or high demand for all these services.
- Examines patients and reviews their history to provide diagnosis of mental and physical conditions.
- Orders medication as needed, provides minor medical procedures or other methods of treatment for diseases, injuries, or other physical or mental conditions according to the guidelines of standardized procedures.
- Orders laboratory tests, evaluates results, and other or adjust treatments as indicated.
- Makes referrals as needed to provide for medical care required by students that is beyond the scope of Student Health Services.
- Counsels’ students for immediate problem solving and/or development of an individual health resources through which additional assistance may be obtained.
- Provide crisis intervention for the campus community as outlined in the Valley College, Crisis Intervention Plan.
- Assist in organizing and maintaining a variety of confidential health records and files include electronic health records.
- Assists in analysis of data collected from daily documentation, surveys, service area outcomes, and other sources. Make recommendations for additional programs based on trends in data.
- Maintains a good collaborative working relationship with supervising physician and colleagues at the Health and Wellness Center.
- Assists coordinator in collecting data required to complete all necessary reports.
- Serves as a liaison between the college and community-based referral agencies.
- Assists in the review and update of policies, procedures, and protocols.
- In the absence of the coordinator serves as a two-way communications link between Student Health Services and the College Administration.
- Acts as a resource person regarding matters related to campus health and safety; also acts as a catalyst to bring about positive changes.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Possession of valid license as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in the State of California
- Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in Nursing or Physician Assistant program
- Maintains current continuing education.
- Two years of experience in family medicine or college health within the last five years
- Current BLS/CPR with AED instruction certification
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Strong written and oral communication skills to communicate diplomatically and effectively with co-workers and department staff. Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team through close collaboration with colleagues and coordinate with others. Knowledge of college culture and needs of students, scope of practice in community or ambulatory care setting, effective patient teaching, health counseling, and health education. Knowledge of legal parameters for practice within respective discipline in the State of California; basic laws and regulations pertaining to health services; communicable disease and immunization requirements.
Physical Demands and Working Environment
Working Conditions:
The Health Services environment may produce exposure to unpleasant and hazardous medical conditions and communicable disease. Must be able to lift equipment weighing up to 50lb, kneel on ground for medical emergencies, squat, bend, and reach. Physical abilities must include dexterity of both hands and fingers; as well as acuity of vision and hearing necessary for performance of physical assessment, treatments and effective communication.
Part-time temporary position as a Professional Expert, consisting of 8 – 24 hours per week with no permanent status granted.
