Job Description

Title: Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner

Department: Orthopedics

Clinic Locations: Newport Beach, CA, Placentia, CA, and Riverside, CA

Scheduled Work Hours: 40 hours per week – Monday through Friday, 8 am – 5 pm, comprised of four (4) clinic days and one (1) day in surgery.

The Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner will provide patient care in outpatient medical and surgical services, including patient histories and physicals, treatments, medications, and surgical procedures as first-assist, pre-operative and post-operative care, to a wide range of orthopedic patients from general orthopedics, sports medicine, total joints, ortho foot and ankle, spine, and podiatry to patients, under the supervision of a licensed physician. The Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner will also have direct reporting responsibility to the Medical Director.

The Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner may perform, including, but not limited to, the following services:

  • Independent patient care (in the clinic, seeing post-op, pre-op, new patients, returning patients, and performing injections or other minor procedures/reductions, interpreting images, reviewing labs, diagnostics tests, x-ray, MRI, medications, and making referrals) as well as inpatient consultations, admissions, discharges, and ER evaluations.
  • The operating room first assists in orthopedic and pain management surgical cases and procedures.
  • Develop appropriate treatment plans
  • Initiate appropriate emergency care in the inpatient and outpatient setting until the arrival of the supervising physician.
  • Assist patients and interpret examination findings to determine the nature and extent of dysfunction relative to persons limited by medical problems, birth defects, or health-related conditions to restore their abilities to move and perform functional activities in their daily lives.
  • Manage discharge of patients with appropriate disposition, follow-up planning, adjunctive therapy management, and education, medical records, including discharge summaries.
  • Prepare patients for surgery, including scheduling, education, positioning, skin preparation and administration of local anesthetic, IV sedation, and preparation of equipment.
  • Function as a first or second assistant to surgeons during surgical procedures as needed and as directed for a wide variety of surgical cases.
  • Assist with the use of monitoring devices, C-Arm, and similar.
  • Performs complex surgical techniques as needed and as directed by the physician.
  • Attend outpatient clinic and participate in the initial evaluation, pre-op, post-op, H&P, and other longitudinal care.
  • Obtain medical history and perform a physical examination.
  • Complete appropriate documentation of all evaluations, care, and services rendered in the medical record in a timely manner.
  • Make appropriate referrals for consultations, and schedule ancillary tests/procedures as needed.
  • Respond to telephone inquiries of patients and provide appropriate medical care, referral for consultations, or counseling.
  • Communicate with primary care and referring physicians regarding patient care.
  • Supervise medical assistants and x-ray technicians.

Experience/Education/Training/Licensure

  • Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies and/or Master of Nursing Practitioner.
  • Active and unrestricted California Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner License
  • Active and unrestricted DEA Certificate
  • CPR Certified
  • Prior experience working with orthopedic and pain management patients before and after surgical and pain management procedures.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and benefits upon completion of the introductory and waiting period as described in the company employee handbook. Starting salary ranges between $120,000 – $140,000 annually, with full benefits and company-reimbursed malpractice premiums.
