Full Job Description
Psychiatric physician assistants have a wide range of responsibilities, which can include:
- Providing therapeutic interventions to patients in order to help them manage their mental health issues.
- Conducting assessments of patients’ physical and mental health needs in order to determine treatment plans.
- Providing counseling services to patients, including diagnosing and treating mental illnesses such as depression or anxiety disorders
- Discussing treatment options with patients in order to help them make informed decisions about their care.
- Administering medication to patients who have been prescribed medication for their condition by a psychiatrist.
- Prescribing medications to patients who need long-term treatment for mental illnesses such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.
- Participating in group therapy sessions with patients who have similar issues.
- Performing routine diagnostic tests in order to identify possible causes of mental illness.
- Referring patients to other physicians or mental health specialists when appropriate
- Take medical histories, handle crisis response, administer medication, and medication injections, and direct mental health services.
- Serve as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team to develop and implement individual and measurable treatment goals and modalities for each patient.
- Develop working relationships with physicians and providers that refer.
- Evaluate complaints of an acute and chronic nature
- Monitors changes in patients with persistent mental health
- Initiates and completes all relevant documentation within organizational time frames.
- Provides support, psychotherapy and supportive counseling with patients in regard to psychosocial, environmental and physical well being
- Performs related duties as directed.
- Assists in staff training.
Education:
Psychiatric physician assistants are required to have a master’s degree from a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Physician Assistants. These programs typically take two years.
- Advanced Practice Nursing degree (NP or APRN) from an accredited school.
- Board certification or eligibility.
- Valid and unrestricted license to practice.
- Demonstrated expertise in psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment.
- Strong knowledge of psychopharmacology and experience in medication management.
- Proficiency in providing evidence-based psychotherapy interventions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish rapport with patients and collaborate effectively with colleagues.
- Compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care, with a commitment to promoting their well-being and recovery.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team setting.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage a diverse caseload.
- Adherence to ethical guidelines and a commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $70.00 – $100.00 per hour
