Full Job Description

ECUC is a fast-paced clinic that has been serving the East County community for over 40 years. We are a full-service urgent care with in-house labs and x-rays. Our medical group has an exceptionally friendly, cooperative, and healthy work culture. We treat adults and children from 6 months and older and we have a diverse patient population. We are an urgent care practice and occupational medical practice.

About the role:

The Physician Assistant (PA) will initiate and perform activities in a manner that will help extend the physicians’ services providing medical care at the urgent care. They will work within their educational and clinical capabilities. The PA will act under the aegis of and will be directly responsible to the Medical Director.

Reports to:

  • Medical Director and Operations Manager

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of an accredited Physician’s Assistant Program
  • Appropriate licensure in the State of California
  • Appropriate certification at level of training, NCCPA. The continuation of 50 hours of CME as required by NCCPA every 2 years
  • Department of Transportation Medical Examiners Certificate preferred. Certification will be required before end of 90-day probationary period
  • Active DEA number

Job Responsibilities:

Duties will consist of, but not be limited to:

· For urgent and not so emergent patients, the PA will assess the patient through history, physical examination, and ancillary testing appropriate to the patient’s presenting complaint. They will initiate therapy and provide disposition of the patient supervised by the Medical Director or supervising physician.

· The supervising physician will address any questions of the care of the patient. Consultations by specialist may be obtained at the discretion of the PA.

· The PA will compete the appropriate medical records following the guidelines of the State of California Physician Assistant Committee. Periodically, the supervising physician will review the medical charts for Quality Assurance compliance.

· If a condition is not mentioned within the list below, then it will be with the understanding that the patient’s evaluation will fall under what is “Standard of care in the medical community.” References that can be used and not limited to are: Harrisons Book of Internal Medicine, Tarascon publications, New England Journal of Medicine, and East County Urgent Care Best Practices Guidelines.

Physical Exam:

  • General Physical Exams
  • School/sports physicals
  • DOT Physicals
  • Health Screenings
  • Employer Physicals
  • Return to duty physical exams

Dental Care:

  • Gingival and Periodontal Infections
  • Acute dental injuries
  • Dental caries, pain or abscesses
  • Antibiotics, analgesics, or medications will be governed by the Standard of Care.

Dermatological:

  • Acute contact dermatitis
  • Rashes
  • Acute dermatological infections
  • Antibiotics, analgesics, or medications will be governed by the Standard of Care.

Ear, Nose, Throat:

  • Ear infection, pain, or trauma
  • Acute Pharyngitis/tonsilitis
  • Epistaxis-simple or anterior; posterior epistaxis under the direct supervision of the physician.

General Medical:

  • Upper Respiratory Infections
  • Obtain patient histories and perform physician examination, obtain consent for privileged procedures, order proper testing along with developing and implementing a treatment plan.
  • Acute and chronic allergic reactions. Severe allergic reactions will be under the guidance of supervising physician.
  • Evaluation and offer counseling and education regarding matters pertaining to the patient’s physical and mental health
  • Medication/tetanus requests
  • Make appropriate referrals
  • Uncomplicated UTI
  • Abdominal pain. May require review by supervising physician prior to discharge.
  • Chest Pain. Any cardiac or potential life-threatening chest pain may require review by supervising physician prior to discharge.
  • Evaluation and treatment of pulmonary infections or difficulty breathing
  • Acute neurological changes. May require review by a supervising physician prior to discharge

OB/GYN:

  • GYN pain or bleeding
  • GYN infections
  • Breast infections or pain
  • OB pain or associated bleeding may require review by the physician prior to discharge.

Injury Management:

  • Perform indicated local anesthetic techniques with appropriate material. This can include but not limited to local infiltration, digital blocks, or regional blocks.
  • Evaluate manage, and arrange appropriate follow-up of patients with:
  • Foreign bodies
  • Abrasions/contusions
  • Wound infections
  • Abscess formations
  • Puncture wounds
  • Lacerations
  • Bites
  • Nail trephination
  • Subungual hematomas
  • Extremity injury without neurovascular compromise; any such compromise may require immediate consultation from a supervising physician
  • Suture removal and wound rechecks
  • Burns: any 3rd degree burns, 2nd degree covering more than 2-% or burns to the face, hands, genitals, or circumferential require immediate consultation from an attending physician.

Ophthalmologic:

  • Eye infections
  • Foreign bodies-simple
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Any eye trauma other than minor injury or if globe penetration will require immediate consultation from a physician.

Orthopedic:

  • Acute inflammatory processes of the tendon, bursa, or soft tissue
  • Sprains and strains
  • Trigger point injections or joint aspirations
  • Immobilization of musculoskeletal injuries
  • Application of splints
  • Closed and neurovascular intact fractures, including x-ray interpretation, reduction of fractures or dislocations and splinting. Any significant fracture or neurovascular compromised injury will require immediate consult from a physician.

Pediatric:

  • Any child evaluated under the age of 6 months will be discussed with a physician prior to discharge.
  • Upper and lower respiratory problems
  • Rashes
  • Minor head injuries
  • Lacerations

The above list may not be complete for every situation that may be evaluated at the clinic. In the event of a situation that is not covered about the PA may evaluate and treat the patient within the Standard of Care for the medical community. Any questions of the patient’s care should be directed to an attending or supervising physician prior to discharge.

Prescription Writing Privileges:Any controlled medications will be in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for the State of California.Medications other than controlled substances will be in practice that is consistent within the Standard of Care for that particular medical condition.

Consultation Requirements:The PA is required to always an immediately seek consultation on the following types of patients and situations: patients’ failure to respond to therapy; PA’s uncertainty of the diagnosis; patient’s desire to see a physician; any condition which the PA feels exceeds their ability to manage.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $65.00 – $70.00 per hour
