Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant — Orthopedics
Summary
The Nurse Practioner or Physician Assistant for Orthopedics is responsible for the care of patients, including assessment of health status, diagnosis, development of plan of care and treatment, implementation of treatment plan, and evaluation of patient status. The provider will assist the physician in surgery and complete patient rounding. The provider will be responsible for maintaining accurate and current patient records, scheduling and administering follow-up appointments to patients as required, and work as a team with other care providers to ensure delivery of premium care to each patient.
Key Accountabilities

Conduct physical exams, medical history, image interpretation, and patient evaluation/care. Consult with physicians as needed and refer to physicians for more complicated cases or cases that are not a routine part of a PA’s scope of work.

Orders diagnostic tests, scans and therapeutic interventions as appropriate for care. Interpret interventions and determine the need for follow-up appointments and further treatment options. Prescribe medication. Monitor therapy and provide continuity of care.

Administer injections, participate in suture and dressing removal and manage simple fracture management/cast application and removal.

Serve as the resource for patients’ need for orthopedic care information, counseling and provide guidance for any patients and family members as appropriate. Facilitate staff, patient, and family decision making by providing educational tools and pre- and post-operative education.

Triages patient calls and evaluates patient problems. Responds to emergencies including use of CPR.

Prepare patients for surgery, including positioning, skin preparation, administration of local anesthetic and equipment preparation.

Function as first or second assist in the operating room, including performing surgical exposure, surgical dissections, layer closure of wounds, etc.

Participate in physician call and rounding schedule rotation and clinic shifts.

Update patient records and check records for accuracy at each patient appointment ensuring appropriate documentation to meet coding/billing and regulatory requirements.

Communicate and collaborate with multidisciplinary team members and support a positive, productive, and engaging work environment.

Meet quality metrics and engage in teams to create improvements to ensure optimal patient care.

Support the work of the clinic and organization by participation in improvement activities including but not limited to implementation and ongoing success of operational improvements, compliance efforts, IS initiatives and quality improvements.
Required Qualifications

Nurse Practitioner (NP):
-
Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.

Current RN license with the Minnesota Board of Nursing, in good standing.

Current Nurse Practitioner/APRN license in Minnesota, in good standing.

Current national board certification as a Nurse Practitioner through a recognized national certifying organization.

Physician Assistant (PA):
-
Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.

Current Physician Assistant license from the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice, in good standing.

Current certification as a Physician Assistant through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

Must be enrolled in the NH+C RQI program for BLS certification and complete the requirements within 90 days of enrollment. Must remain current by completing quarterly assignments prior to the end of each calendar quarter.

Must be able to speak, read, and write English proficiently to ensure safe and effective communication in a healthcare environment.

Completion of Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training.
-
Completion of Workplace Violence education during New Employee Orientation and annually thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience with strong clinical skills and experience in orthopedics

Strong written and oral communication skills
Schedule
- 80 hours per two-week pay period (1.0 FTE)
- Schedule based on provider needs; most clinic schedules begin around 8:00 a.m.
- Weekends as needed
