Orthopedic Physician Assistant, PRN

Join Our Orthopedic Team

University of Maryland Capital Region Health is seeking an experienced Physician Assistant (PA) to join our Orthopedic team on a PRN basis in Largo, Maryland.

This is an exciting opportunity for a PA who enjoys the variety of orthopedic medicine and wants to work across both the inpatient setting and outpatient orthopedic clinic. You’ll collaborate closely with orthopedic physicians, fellow APPs, nurses, and other members of the multidisciplinary care team while developing experience across the full continuum of orthopedic care.

The primary role will provide coverage for Orthopedic 25-hour shifts, with training to support additional aspects of the orthopedic service, including the inpatient day role.

Flexible PRN Opportunity

The PRN Orthoedic PA will provide coverage based on the team’s scheduling needs and help maintain full coverage of the orthopedic clinical schedule.

PRN commitment:

• Primary coverage through 25-hour Orthopedic shifts
• Additional coverage based on departmental needs
• Minimum commitment of two (2) clinical shifts per quarter
• Training across multiple aspects of the Orthopedic service, including the inpatient day role

What You’ll Do

Working collaboratively with the physician care team, you’ll provide comprehensive orthopedic care to patients across inpatient and outpatient settings.

Responsibilities include:

• Obtain comprehensive medical histories and perform physical examinations
• Participate in daily patient rounds
• Evaluate and manage orthopedic patients in the inpatient setting
• Support patient care within the outpatient orthopedic clinic
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests, imaging, and laboratory studies
• Develop initial diagnoses and treatment plans in collaboration with physicians
• Provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive healthcare services
• Coordinate care with attending physicians, consulting teams, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals
• Educate and counsel patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, procedures, and follow-up care
• Perform therapeutic and advanced procedures within approved privileges and demonstrated competencies
• Perform orthopedic procedures such as Steinmann pin placement, when appropriately trained and privileged
• 
  First assist in the operating room when necessary
• Help ensure continuity and full clinical coverage across the Orthopedic service

Depending on training, demonstrated competency, and approved privileges, you’ll have opportunities to participate in advanced orthopedic procedures, inpatient management, outpatient care, and operative cases.

Our PRN APPs are integrated members of the team and are trained to provide flexible coverage where their expertise is needed most.

Providers are expected to maintain applicable continuing education requirements, including 50 hours of Category I CME every two years and 32 hours of trauma-related CME, as required for the position.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required
• Graduate of an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program
• Current certification through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
• Active Maryland license through the Maryland Board of Physicians
• 
  At least one year of orthopedic experience preferred
• BLS and ACLS certification required
• ATLS certification preferred
• Must successfully complete credentialing through the UM Capital Region Health Medical Staff Office
• Must meet applicable Maryland Board of Physicians standards and procedural protocols

Compensation is commensurate with clinical experience.
