PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT (PA-C) – INTEGRATED MEDICAL CARE

Central Virginia Preferred Providers (CVPP) is seeking a compassionate, collaborative Physician Assistant (PA-C) to join our multidisciplinary outpatient behavioral health practice. This part-time position offers the unique opportunity to provide integrated medical care within a comprehensive mental health and substance use treatment program while working alongside psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, therapists, nurses, and other behavioral health professionals.

Unlike a traditional primary care practice, this role focuses on supporting the medical needs of individuals receiving behavioral health and substance use treatment. The Physician Assistant serves as an essential member of the treatment team by providing medical evaluations, coordinating care, reviewing diagnostic findings, and ensuring patients are medically supported throughout their behavioral health treatment.

Position Summary

The Physician Assistant will provide focused medical services to adult patients receiving outpatient psychiatric and substance use treatment. Primary responsibilities include medical screenings, laboratory review, ordering diagnostic testing, medical clearances, referrals, medication management for common medical conditions, and consultation with psychiatric providers to ensure coordinated, patient-centered care.

The Physician Assistant will also play an important leadership role by participating in and managing Collaborative Care (CoCM) meetings, working closely with the interdisciplinary treatment team to coordinate care for patients with complex behavioral health and medical needs.

Essential Responsibilities :

• Conduct medical evaluations and health screenings for adult behavioral health patients.
• Review laboratory results and diagnostic testing.
• Order laboratory studies, diagnostic tests, and medical evaluations as clinically indicated.
• Provide medical clearances for psychiatric treatment when appropriate.
• Manage common chronic medical conditions including hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, COPD/asthma, and smoking cessation.
• Provide medication management within the scope of outpatient integrated medical care.
• Coordinate care with psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, therapists, primary care providers, specialists, and other healthcare professionals.
• Provide medical consultation and support for patients receiving Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT).
• Review outside medical records and incorporate pertinent findings into treatment recommendations.
• Interpret electrocardiograms (EKGs) as clinically indicated.
• Facilitate and manage Collaborative Care (CoCM) meetings, promoting communication and coordination among the multidisciplinary treatment team.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and interdisciplinary case consultation.

Qualifications

Required

• Current unrestricted Virginia Physician Assistant license.
• Current DEA Registration.
• Current Virginia Controlled Substance Registration.
• Excellent clinical assessment and communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary behavioral health team.

Preferred

• Minimum one year of clinical experience as a Physician Assistant.
• Experience in outpatient medical practice.
• Experience working with patients who have behavioral health and/or substance use disorders.
• Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
• Experience using Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.
