DESCRIPTION

The Department of Pediatrics at UC San Diego is seeking board-certified or board-eligible physicians to serve as Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) Hospitalist Physicians at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego (RCHSD).

The CTICU operates as an admit-to-discharge, adaptable-acuity unit, caring for patients across the full spectrum of cardiac care — from critical illness and acute postoperative recovery through convalescence and discharge home. CTICU Hospitalist Physicians will practice exclusively in the CTICU under the supervision and direction of Cardiac Intensivist Attending Physicians.

The CTICU Hospitalist role will include:

  • Serving as a primary/front-line clinician on day and night shifts in the CTICU caring for infants, children, adolescents, and adults with congenital and acquired heart disease across all acuity levels — from critically ill and acutely postoperative patients through convalescence and discharge — under the direction and supervision of the cardiac intensivist attending physician.
  • Evaluation and management of acute and critical illness, including assistance with critical care procedures under direct supervision. This will encompass assisting in airway management, vascular access, resuscitation, and other cardiac critical care procedures as needed.
  • Providing continuity of care as patients transition from high-acuity critical care to step-down and floor-level care within the same unit, including discharge planning and family education in partnership with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Contributing to a dynamic, multidisciplinary team including pediatric cardiothoracic surgery providers, CTICU nursing, pediatric cardiology attendings and fellows, cardiac critical care attendings and fellows, pediatric residents, and an experienced and skilled group of CTICU Advanced Practice Professionals.
  • Participation in CTICU educational conferences, quality improvement, and research activities as desired.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Board-certified or Board-eligible in Pediatrics, Pediatric Cardiology, or Pediatric Critical Care Medicine

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certified

OUTSTANDING OPPORTUNITY

This is a unique and rich opportunity for new pediatric residency or fellowship graduates — including pediatricians, freshly trained pediatric cardiologists, and pediatric intensivists — who are considering or preparing for a career in cardiac intensive care. The position is ideally suited for candidates seeking a dedicated year of immersive experience in pediatric cardiac critical care to develop expertise in the pathophysiology and management of complex, high-acuity cardiac patients, refine procedural skills, support families through difficult moments, and explore cardiac intensive care as a long-term career path under the instruction and direction of expert cardiac intensivist faculty.

Standard work shifts will include both daytime and overnight.
