Job Description
ATC West Healthcare is seeking a Physician Assistant First Assist to join its cardiac surgery team in a full-time locum role. This position supports a high-acuity, adult-only cardiac surgery program within a Level I Trauma Center, working alongside a multidisciplinary surgical team performing complex cardiovascular and thoracic procedures. The PA will function as a surgical first assist in a fast-paced operative environment with both scheduled and on-call responsibilities.
The role involves assisting in a wide range of advanced cardiac and thoracic surgeries, including CABG and valve procedures, while supporting a consistent surgical volume of 1–3 cases per day. The position also includes night and weekend call coverage and requires strong procedural expertise in cardiac surgery first assist skills.
Dates / Schedule
- Start date: September (credentialing takes 90–120 days)
- Full-time schedule: 4 ten-hour shifts per week
- Call requirements:
- 1 night per week
- 1 weekend per month
- No clinic or teaching responsibilities
- 100% adult patient population
- Salary Range for 24hr/call flat rate $1200-$1300 with 4hr gratis
Job Details / Responsibilities
- Provide first assist support in cardiac surgery procedures
- Assist with 1–3 surgeries per day
- Perform and assist in:
- CABG with endoscopic vein harvesting (EVH) and radial harvesting
- On-pump and off-pump bypass surgeries
- Valve repair and replacement procedures
- Congenital cardiac defect repairs (ASD, VSD, PFO)
- Aneurysm and aorto-thoracic repairs
- Lung resections including VATS procedures
- Chest wall, pleural, esophageal, and diaphragm surgeries
- Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) procedures
- Insert and remove arterial lines
- Participate in cardiac surgery call coverage (no vascular call)
- Work within a 300-bed Level I Trauma Center with a 12-bed CICU
- Collaborate with 5 physicians and a robust APP team (OR, ICU, floor, and clinic support)
- Utilize onsite lab and imaging resources
- Support central referral system directed to physicians
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Board Certified required
- NCCPA certification required
- Active Colorado license highly preferred
- Minimum 6 months of cardiac surgery first assist experience required, including:
- CABG with EVH and endoscopic radial harvesting
- Valve surgeries
- Structural heart procedures
- Aortic surgeries
- Proficiency in all listed cardiac and thoracic procedures required
- Ability to insert and remove arterial lines required
- BLS certification required
- COVID vaccination required
- NPDB report within 30 days of presentation required
- Clean malpractice and background history highly preferred
- Strong ability to work in high-acuity cardiac surgical settings with call responsibilities
