Full Job Description

Retina Consultants is a busy Medical and Surgical Retina practice seeking a detail-oriented and patient-focused Physician Assistant (PA) to assist us in our Photobiomodulation (PBM) Therapy department. The primary responsibility of this department is the delivery of LED-based treatments to improve retinal cell function for patients with Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

In conjunction with our retina specialists, the PA will assist in the logistics, staff training, equipment set up, patient education, clinical evaluation, and treatment. No prior ophthalmology experience is required. On-the-job training and direct supervision will be provided until the PA is comfortable assisting patients semi-independently.

At all times, the PA will have access to a licensed physician who is board-certified in Ophthalmology and a fellowship-trained Vitreoretinal Surgeon.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Device Operation: Operate advanced PBM devices for appropriate conditions to perform approved and ordered patient treatments

•Patient Assessment: Evaluate patients’ medical histories and physical conditions to determine eligibility and/or response to treatment in conjunction with their retina specialists

  • Patient Education: Explain the PBM process, benefits, and what to expect to patients and

their families.

  • Treatment Documentation: Maintain detailed records of treatments, patient responses, and

progress.

  • Safety & Protocol Adherence: Follow strict safety guidelines and clinic protocols for light

therapy application.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with the doctors to integrate PBM into treatment plans and ensure a seamless patient experience from check in to check out.
  • Stay up to date on the latest data on PBM treatment and perform data acquisition for any doctor-derived research studies on outcomes / efficacy.

KEY KNOWLEDGE AREAS

  • Basic understanding of Age-Related Macular Degeneration
  • detailed understanding of PBM clinical trial data, outcomes, treatment processes, schedule, and active clinical trials.

On-the-job training can be provided for specialty-specific skills:

  • Acquisition and interpretation of fundus photographs or optical coherence tomography
  • Measurement of visual acuity
  • Tonometry (measurement of intraocular pressure)

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program
  • Successful passage of the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) or

equivalent

  • Prior experience in Ophthalmology is a plus (but not required)

Maintain the following licenses and certifications:

  • State Physician Assistant License
  • Controlled Substance Registration
  • Federal DEA Registration
  • Current certification by a national organization as an Advanced Practitioner, e.g. NCCPA
  • PALS and ACLS Certification
  • NRCME Certification
