Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Medical Director, the Physician Assistant provides high-quality clinical care by exercising independent judgment in patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and counseling. This role plays a critical part in supporting Unity Health Care’s mission to deliver compassionate and culturally competent care to underserved populations across Washington, DC.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic services under physician supervision
- Obtain comprehensive medical histories and perform physical examinations
- Order and interpret laboratory and radiologic tests
- Diagnose medical conditions and prescribe medications, including controlled substances (with DEA license)
- Provide health education, preventive care, and participate in screening programs
- Manage acute and chronic conditions within scope of practice
- Refer patients to specialists, hospitals, and community resources as appropriate
- Provide urgent care and coordinate hospital transfers when necessary
- Ensure documentation includes supervising physician’s name and is completed accurately and timely
- Submit delegation agreement to the DC Medical Board
- Ensure clinical notes and orders are countersigned within required timeframes (10 days)
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams on patient care plans
- Participate in peer reviews, quality improvement initiatives, and required meetings
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program
- Successful completion of the NCCPA certification exam
- Active Physician Assistant license in the District of Columbia (or eligibility to obtain)
- DEA registration (or ability to obtain)
- Strong commitment to serving medically underserved populations
