Virginia Urology is a large and growing specialty physician practice that has served central Virginia for over 75 years. Our well-established private practice includes providers in urology, urogynecology, physical therapy, and radiology. We are currently seeking an experienced Certified Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant to join our multi-faceted and growing practice. Applicants with surgical and/or hospital inpatient experience are strongly preferred.
Clinical responsibilities include providing outpatient care at multiple Virginia Urology offices and Richmond area hospitals, as needed.
Education and Licensure requirements include:
- Graduated from an accredited nurse practitioner program
- Certification required as an Adult Nurse Practitioner-Board Certified (ANP-BC) granted by the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC)
- Licensure as a Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Virginia
- Valid DEA drug license
- Current ACLS and BLS certification required
Essential Job Functions:
- Take an appropriate history, perform an appropriate physical examination in both the inpatient and outpatient setting, make an assessment of the patient, and record the pertinent data in a manner meaningful to the supervising physician.
- Provide appropriate communication and documentation to the supervising physician in a timely manner regarding examinations, treatment plans and notes, coding and other reporting.
- Perform or assist in performing therapeutic procedures delegated by the supervising physician, provided that the procedures are consistent with the supervising physician’s practice and with the patient’s condition. Such procedures include, but are not limited to urethral catheterization, clot evacuation, radiological procedures, urethral dilations, injections, administration of medications, and drain removal.
- Assist in clinic setting, including clinics in outlying locations
- Recognize and evaluate situations which call for the immediate attention of the supervising physician and initiate necessary treatment and/or procedures essential for the life of the patient.
- Instruct and counsel patients and their families regarding matters pertaining to their physical and mental health, such as diets, social habits, aging, and long-term management of disease.
- Assist the supervising physician by arranging admissions or making inpatient hospital rounds, evaluate emergency department patients, making appropriate entries in patients’ medical records including discharge summaries, reviewing and administering treatment and therapy plans, ordering routine diagnostic laboratory tests and radiological services, acting as first or second assist in surgery under the direct supervision of the supervising physician, and providing continuing care to patients following surgery.
- Assist the supervising physicians by responding to hospital consults and after-hour calls to determine appropriate intermittent care management including but not limited to identifying emergent cases that require the immediate assistance of the supervising physician or admission to nearest emergency care facility. This includes some night and weekend call coverage.
- Facilitate the supervising physician’s referral of patients to the appropriate health facilities, agencies and resources of the community.
- Per the Virginia Board of Medicine, prescribe, administer and dispense legend drugs and Schedule II-V controlled drugs and devices as reasonable and necessary to ensure appropriate standard of care within the practice of urology.

- Meet and maintain continuing education requirements to be able to practice under currently approved clinical practice protocols.
