The Hematology-Oncology Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) will function as part of a dynamic team in providing care to patients requiring Hematology/Oncology care at Pennsylvania Hospital. The APP will offer care to patients in collaboration with physicians within the division, provide inpatient care and consultation, and facilitate patient/family education and support.

The Hematology-Oncology APP will work closely with physicians, nursing staff and other members of the multi-disciplinary hospital team; the APP will perform histories, physical exams, consults and procedures in accordance with credentialing, and provide patient/family education. The APP will also participate in research as appropriate, ensure regulatory compliance, document care according to standards, and prescribe therapeutic interventions in accordance with the collaborative/supervisory agreement and state regulations.

The Advanced Practice Provider is responsible to promote organizational values of patient and visitor satisfaction by demonstrating courtesy and respect for all their families, visitors, and other employees. The APP will demonstrate competence in the assessment, treatment, and care of patients served. Oncology experience is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides direct clinical care for patient population according to established protocols and utilizes evidence based practice standards in collaboration with team.
  • Maintains accurate and confidential medical records. Documents all medical evaluations, diagnoses, procedures, treatments, outcomes, education, referrals, and consultations consistent with organizational standards in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Identifies self properly to the patient and family, and clarifies the role of the nurse practitioner or physician assistant if necessary.
  • The APP should function within their scope and refer to the collaborating/supervising physician when outside of scope, and/or directed by the physician or when requested by the patient and/or family. Performs interventions specific to assigned patient population and collaborative/written agreement.
  • Participates in the performance improvement processes to meet quality of care and service standards.
  • Demonstrates awareness of professional responsibility as role model to peers and members of the health care team.
  • Addresses patient and family concerns and creates a therapeutic relationship to provide support.
  • Provide patient education, counseling and instruction regarding patient diagnosis, medical treatments, medications, and preventative care.
  • Participate in and support accreditation, compliance and regulatory activities of the organization.
  • Precept students and other health care learners.
  • Identifies patient/family needs for community resources and refers appropriately.

Credentials:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (Required)
  • BLS/CPR, as a healthcare provider as per the American Heart Association (For providers in the ambulatory setting) required
  • Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Masters Physician Assistant required
  • Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Pennsylvania State license, active and in good standing at time of hire
  • Prescriptive Authority (Required)
  • Registered Nurse – PA (Required if Acute Care Nurse Practitioner)

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Master of Arts or Science (Required)
  • The CRNP and/or PA-C must be reviewed by the Credentials Committee and approved by the Medical Board.
  • Education Specialization: Master’s Degree or Doctor of Nursing Practice(DNP) in Nursing or Masters Prepared Physician Assistant
