Full Job Description

We are a dedicated physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) practice committed to providing high-quality, patient-centered care for individuals with musculoskeletal conditions, chronic pain, sports injuries, neurological impairments, and rehabilitation needs. Our team includes physicians and support staff, working collaboratively to restore function, manage pain, and improve patients’ quality of life.

Position Summary

The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant will provide advanced clinical care in physical medicine and rehabilitation, with a focus on performing musculoskeletal injections, electromyography, prescribing medications including controlled substances, and managing all aspects of patient care within the authorized NP scope in California. This role emphasizes interventional pain management, rehabilitation planning, and independent practice where permitted under California law (Business & Professions Code ยงยง 2836.1, 2837.103-104). The ideal candidate is experienced in PM&R, pain management, or Orthopedics, proficient in procedural interventions, and holds necessary credentials for furnishing controlled substances.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Perform comprehensive patient evaluations, including detailed history taking,

physical examinations, diagnosis, and development of individualized treatment

plans for musculoskeletal disorders, chronic pain, post-injury rehabilitation, and

related conditions.

Administer musculoskeletal and interventional procedures, such as joint

injections (e.g., knee, shoulder, hip), trigger point injections, soft tissue injections,

and other ultrasound-guided injections as within scope and competency.

Prescribe, furnish, and manage pharmacological treatments, including non-opioid

therapies, opioids, and other medications; independently prescribe Schedule II-V

controlled substances in compliance with California regulations, including

mandatory CURES consultation and DEA requirements.

Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests (e.g., X-rays, MRIs, EMGs, lab

work) and coordinate referrals to specialists, physical therapy, occupational

therapy, or other services.

Develop and oversee rehabilitation programs, including patient education on self-

management, exercise regimens, lifestyle modifications, and pain coping

strategies.

Provide follow-up care, monitor treatment efficacy, adjust plans as needed, and

manage acute exacerbations or complications.

Collaborate with physicians, therapists, and interdisciplinary team members;

consult or refer complex cases as required under practice protocols.

Document all patient encounters accurately and timely in the electronic health

record (EHR), ensuring compliance with HIPAA, state laws, and practice

standards.

Participate in quality assurance, peer review, and continuous improvement

activities.

Educate patients and families on conditions, treatments, preventive measures,

and rehabilitation goals.

Stay current with evidence-based practices through continuing education, with

focus on pharmacology, addiction risks for controlled substances, and PM&R

advancements.

Qualifications Required:

Masters or Doctoral degree (MSN/DNP) from an accredited Nurse Practitioner

program.

Current, unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license issued by the Board of

Registered Nursing (BRN).

National board certification as a Nurse Practitioner (e.g., AANP, ANCC) in Family,

Adult-Gerontology, or relevant specialty.

California NP Furnishing Number for prescribing medications and devices.

DEA registration with authority to prescribe Schedule II-V controlled substances.
