Overview
Gastroenterology practice in Orange County is seeking an experienced Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to provide dedicated inpatient GI consult support. This position is primarily hospital based and focused on the management of acute gastrointestinal conditions. Outpatient clinic responsibilities may be required in the future as the practice grows, but are not part of the initial role.
Responsibilities
- Perform inpatient GI consults including initial evaluations, follow up assessments, documentation, and communication with the supervising gastroenterologist
- Evaluate and manage patients with conditions such as GI bleeding, abdominal pain, pancreatitis, liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, dysphagia, and gastrointestinal infections
- Manage a dynamic daily consult census across units including med surg, telemetry, ICU, and emergency department
- Order and interpret diagnostic studies within scope including labs, imaging, stool studies, and procedure results
- Prepare patients for endoscopic procedures, assist during cases when appropriate, and participate in post procedure monitoring
- Coordinate inpatient care plans with hospitalists, surgeons, nurses, case managers, and ancillary teams
- Respond to urgent GI related pages and support rapid assessment of acute changes in patient condition
- Provide patient and family education on diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, procedures, and follow up care
- Document all clinical encounters accurately in EMR systems such as Epic or eClinicalWorks
- Follow hospital policies, sterile technique, infection control protocols, and HIPAA standards
Qualifications
- Active California Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant license
- Minimum one year of experience as a midlevel provider required
- Experience in gastroenterology, internal medicine, emergency medicine, or hospital medicine strongly preferred
- Comfort with inpatient consult workflows and managing acutely ill patients
- Strong clinical assessment and decision making skills
- Effective communication and ability to collaborate with diverse hospital teams
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications
