Position Summary
The Physician Assistant/NP provides comprehensive care to patients with musculoskeletal conditions under the supervision of an orthopedic surgeon. This includes performing assessments, diagnosing injuries, assisting in surgical and non-surgical procedures, managing post-operative care, and providing patient education and follow-up.
Key Responsibilities
- Clinical Care:
- Conduct comprehensive orthopedic evaluations, including patient histories and physical examinations.
- Order, interpret, and review diagnostic imaging and laboratory tests.
- Develop and implement treatment plans for acute and chronic orthopedic conditions.
- Perform joint injections, aspirations, casting, splinting, and wound care.
- Provide pre- and post-operative patient management and education.
- Monitor patient progress and modify treatment plans as needed.
- Surgical Assistance:
- Assist orthopedic surgeons in the operating room (e.g., positioning, suturing, tissue handling).
- Prepare surgical instruments, implants, and equipment.
- Perform first assist duties during orthopedic procedures.
- Administrative and Coordination Duties:
- Document patient encounters accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Coordinate patient care with physicians, nurses, therapists, and other healthcare professionals.
- Participate in rounds, case conferences, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Contribute to clinical research and continuing education activities, as appropriate.
Qualifications
- Education: Master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
- Licensure: Current state PA license; NCCPA certification required.
- Experience:
- Minimum [1–3] years of orthopedic or surgical experience preferred.
- New graduates with orthopedic rotations will be considered.
- Certifications: BLS and ACLS required; ATLS preferred.
- Skills:
- Strong knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy and orthopedic procedures.
- Excellent clinical judgment and diagnostic skills.
- Ability to perform in fast-paced surgical and clinical environments.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proficient in EMR systems and medical documentation.
Work Environment
- Hospital inpatient units, outpatient clinics, and operating rooms.
- May require on-call duties, evening, weekend, or holiday shifts depending on practice needs.
- Physical requirements include standing for extended periods and assisting with patient positioning or transfers.
