Full Job Description
Under the supervision of staff cardiologists, serves as a mid-level provider, functioning independently to provide cardiology outpatient and inpatient care. Provides quality care to patients referred for general cardiac care, including outpatient new and return patient evaluations, as well as inpatient cardiology rounds.
Typical Duties
- Performs comprehensive history and assessment as a Physician Assistant, especially as it relates to patients with cardiac issues.
- Performs psychosocial spiritual and cultural assessments.
- Establishes diagnoses for common short-term and chronic stable conditions.
- Prescribes medications.
- Obtains informed consent (verbal and written) for procedures.
- Assumes the responsibility as a liaison between surgical cardiovascular services and cardiology.
- Provides skilled care to patients regarding specialized cardiology non-invasive and invasive procedures, administering intravenous fluids and medication when necessary.
- Interviews patients and conducts basic physical exams to discover and record pertinent history, symptoms and signs and complaints, especially as evidence of illness or complications in the Division of Cardiology.
- Documents daily progress notes and discharge summaries.
- Assists in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). Uses appropriate instruments as required and maintains emergency medical equipment according to Critical Care Unit (CCU) policies and procedures.
- Attends division meetings, participates in policy-making, research projects and quality assurance data collection and analysis.
- Performs assessments and provide patient education in the Cardiac Heart Failure Program as necessary. Teaches, counsels and advises patients.
- Participates in the Pacemaker Clinic.
- Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Successful completion of a Physician Assistant Program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or proof of completion of ARC-PA program two (2) weeks prior to hire date
- Completion and maintenance of certification by the National Commission on Certification ofPhysician Assistants (NCCPA) or eligibility to obtain certification two (2) weeks prior to hire date
- Current valid state of Illinois Physician Assistant License OR temporary license as a Physician Assistant from the State of Illinois, or eligibility to obtain license two (2) weeks prior to hire date
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Preferred Qualifications
- Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
- At least one (1) year of work experience in Hospital Clinical Cardiology
- Previous Pacemaker experience
- Illinois Controlled Substance license
- Bilingual skills in one or more of the following: English/Spanish, English/Polish, English/Mandarin or English/Arabic (may be required based on need).
- Knowledge of specific equipment, specifically: dobutamine echocardiograms, tilt table, transesophageal echocardiograms, stress testing

- Thorough knowledge of Physician Assistant practices and principles and the ability to apply them in a clinical setting.
- Knowledge of proper hand hygiene and hand washing techniques
- Knowledge of infectious control policies and procedures
- Excellent Physician Assistant clinical and technical skills
- Knowledge and skill to perform mathematical accuracy in measuring and dispensing medication
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate with all levels of staff and a patient population composed of diverse cultures and age groups
- Strong customer service and empathy skills
- Good personal computer and keyboarding skills
- Analytical and organizational, problem-solving, critical thinking, and conflict management/resolution skills
- Demonstrated attention to detail, accuracy and precision
- Ability to maintain the confidentiality of patient related materials in compliance with HIPM requirements
- Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines in a fast paced and stressful environment
- Ability to adhere to department policies and standards utilizing best practices
- Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and composure when challenged
- Ability to function autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Ability to see and hear clearly (including with correction)
- Ability to tolerate exposure to unpleasant noise, odor and temperature
- Willingness and ability to work weekend hours based on a rotational basis as need arises.
