POSITION DESCRIPTION The Physician Assistant will perform clinical and administrative tasks as well as assist the Orthopedic Surgeon with surgical procedures under the supervision of the Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon. This is a salaried-exempt position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Follows organizational procedures to verify the patient identity, reviews current medications and prescriptions, documents medical history (including orthopedic history), and reviews patient vital signs in the electronic health record (EHR) system.
- Examines patients in the Orthopedic Department and formulates treatment plans for orthopedic conditions within the scope of practice.
- Administers or orders and interprets diagnostic tests such as X-rays or blood tests.
- Works independently and, when necessary, with assistance during clinic procedures, including placing and removing all types of braces, casts, and splints; setting broken bones; and performing wound care.
- Assists with pre-operative and post-operative clinical care.
- Assists with, or performs under supervision, closed reduction of fractures.
- Responds promptly to healthcare communications and requests via various platforms, including email.
- Educates and counsels patients and families regarding diagnosis and treatment plans. Answers questions regarding surgeries, procedures, recovery, and risk factor modification.
- Facilitates patient discharge, dictates discharge and transfer summaries in a timely manner.
- Communicates with physicians regarding patient care plans and seeks direction or assistance as needed, within scope of practice.
- Engages in continuing education and regular self-directed study to stay current on medical conditions and to deliver high-quality care, including participation in continuous quality improvement process.
- Performs other duties as assigned, within the scope of practice.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
- One to three years of experience in an orthopedic clinic or orthopedic office. A combination of education and relevant experience may be substituted for direct experience in the field of orthopedics.
- Current license in the State of Nevada with Board Certification as a Physician Assistant (PA).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Position requires the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to demonstrate emotional maturity and approach stressful situations and remain calm under emergency situations and when handling multiple tasks.
- Working knowledge of sterile techniques and special procedures that are applicable to work performed.
- Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients.
- Working knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene and basic health and safety precautions applicable for work in a clinic setting. Working knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions.
- Age specific competencies required in a pediatric setting.
- Daily clinic preparation process; preparing charts and reviewing scheduling.
- Ability to document and communicate pertinent information.
- Clear and professional communication skills are needed to interact frequently with physicians, team members, families, personnel, and consultants.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Frequently alternates between walking, standing, sitting and reaching throughout the day.
- Frequently performs casting, splinting, and other orthopedic clinic procedures, including but not limited to setting fractures, removing casts, placing and adjusting braces, and performing injections.
- Occasionally stoops, bends, and crouches while assisting patients.
- Frequently uses fine hand coordination and manual dexterity to perform accurate data entry on the computer.
- Lifting and pushing/pulling up to 20 lbs. occurs occasionally. May need to assist patients in a wheelchair and safely support the full weight of a patient when necessary.
