Job Title: Physician Assistant – Orthopedic Spine

Location: Montclair, New Jersey (travel required)

Job Type: Full-time (M-F)

Position Summary: We are seeking a highly motivated New Jersey licensed Physician Assistant (PA) with a strong interest in Orthopedic Spine to join our dynamic team (experience is not required). The ideal candidate will work closely with our board-certified Orthopedic Spine Surgeons, playing a crucial role in both clinic and surgical settings, and contributing to exceptional patient outcomes. Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Perform comprehensive patient histories and physical examinations for new and established orthopedic spine patients.
  • Order, interpret, and analyze diagnostic tests including X-rays, MRI, CT scans, and other relevant imaging or laboratory studies.
  • Formulate differential diagnoses and develop individualized treatment plans in collaboration with supervising physicians, adhering to evidence-based medicine.
  • Provide patient education and counseling regarding diagnoses, treatment options (surgical and non-surgical), medications, pre- and post-operative care, and preventative measures.
  • Prescribe medications, durable medical equipment (DME), and referrals for physical therapy, pain management, and other specialists as appropriate.
  • Manage patient follow-up care, assess progress, and adjust treatment plans as needed.
  • Address patient phone calls, inquiries, and prescription refill requests promptly and professionally.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete electronic medical records (EMR) documentation of all patient encounters, procedures, and communications.
  • Collaborate effectively with other healthcare professionals to ensure seamless patient flow and integrated care.
  • Travel between multiple locations (Montclair, Cherry Hill, and New York).

Surgical Responsibilities:

  • Serve as First Assist in orthopedic spine surgical procedures (e.g., discectomies, fusions, laminectomies, artificial disc replacements) in hospital and/or ambulatory surgery center settings.
  • Assist with patient positioning, draping, tissue retraction, hemostasis, and wound closure.
  • Provide comprehensive pre-operative assessments and education to surgical patients.
  • Manage post-operative inpatient and outpatient care, including rounds, writing orders, dictating discharge summaries, and addressing post-surgical complications under physician supervision.
  • Participate in on-call rotation as required.

Professional Development & Compliance:

  • Maintain current knowledge of orthopedic spine practices, procedures, and advancements through continuing medical education (CME).
  • Adhere to all New Jersey state PA licensure requirements, NCCPA certification standards, and institutional policies and protocols.
  • Actively participate in quality improvement initiatives, team meetings, and professional development activities.
  • Serve as a resource and mentor to students or less experienced staff, if applicable.

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Current, active, and unrestricted Physician Assistant license in New Jersey (NJ).
  • Current NCCPA, BLS, and ACLS certification required.
  • Experience not required.
  • Strong understanding of spinal anatomy, pathology, and common orthopedic spine conditions.
  • Excellent clinical assessment, diagnostic, and procedural skills.
  • Proficiency in EMR systems [Athena, Epic]
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and patient education skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities.
