Job Description:

Scope: This Fellowship is a 12-month opportunity for PAs or NPs to obtain invaluable education and clinical experience in a medical specialty. Physician assistant or nurse practitioner (advanced practice provider/APP) must practice within scope of licensure as defined in the Utah Physician Assistant Act/Rules (58-70a, R156-70a), national certification, education, training, and consistent with Intermountain Health approved privileges and/or other aspects of the credentialing process. Must align with professional activities and conduct of an APP in diagnosing, treating, advising or prescribing for any human disease, ailment, injury, infirmity, deformity, pain or other condition dependent upon and under the supervision of a supervising physician.

Essential Job Summary

Our Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) are accountable for the provision of patient care at top of licensure within their scope of practice. The APP is licensed, credentialed and privileged to perform such duties as maintenance and promotion of health and prevention of disease; assessment, diagnosis, treatment, correction, consultation, procedures as outlined by specialty, and referral for health problems; education of the patient, patient’s family, clinical staff, and others; prescription or administration of prescription drugs or devices in accordance with a consultation and referral plan; consultation with other healthcare providers; appropriate and timely documentation of clinical care; and continually learning and developing for optimal patient care and outcomes.

APPs may also participate in research and utilizes evidence-based practice to promote quality patient care, protocol development, care process model development, and best practice standards for assigned patient population.

Job Description

This Fellowship is a 12-month opportunity for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to obtain invaluable education and clinical experience in cardiothoracic surgery at Intermountain Medical Center, a level I trauma center located in Murray, Utah. One Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellows will spend the majority of their year with the cardiac and thoracic teams; to separate teams with a collaborative combination of APPs and surgeons in their respective fields. The major role of the APP fellow will be first assisting in the operating room which will include training on endovascular vein harvest, and VATS procedures. It will also include, rounding on both floor and ICU patients, and work in the outpatient clinic. The fellowship will also have didactic work, and a case study report to be presented to the faculty at the end of the year.

The Fellow will function under the medical supervision of advanced practice providers and physicians on their respective rotations, gaining independence as the year progresses.

Overnight call shifts will constitute a part of the weekly schedule, along with at least one weekend day month, to offer ample opportunity for clinical experience and high acuity patients. The call shift will always be with another APP provider on the team. The Fellow will undergo quarterly evaluations with the Program and Medical Directors.

The ideal candidate for this position will demonstrate a unique passion cardiothoracic surgery, will possess a strong work ethic and self-driven approach to learning, and will be capable of becoming a leader who advances the role of APPs in this field.

• Base Annual Salary: $79,851.20

• Schedule: The schedule on service includes one call shift per week, and at least one weekend day call shift per month, along with the regular work week, thus the weekly schedule can vary anywhere from 40-60 hours/week.

Minimum Requirements

The following must be met prior to beginning employment:

• Current state license as a Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (APRN) at time of program start.
• Certification as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.
• Eligible for state Controlled Substance License II through V.
• Eligible for Federal DEA Certificate II through V.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification for healthcare providers.
• Current ACLS Certification
• Other certification as required (e.g. TNCC, NRP).

Preferred Qualifications

• Masters degree or higher.

Physical Requirements

• Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
• Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
• Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
• Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
• Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.).
• May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period.
