SUMMARY: The physician assistant will work independently in the orthopedic express care to evaluate and treat patients presenting with common musculoskeletal injuries including sprains, strains, fractures. Strong assessment and communication skills are needed in referring patients requiring a higher level of care with an orthopedic physician within the practice.

The physician assistant or nurse practitioner will work independently in express care in direct management of the patient including exams, procedures and services for acute injuries. The provider will also ensure compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the medical treatment facility and request timely consultation or referral with appropriate physicians, clinics, or other health resources as indicated or required.

Comprehensive assessment skills, expert clinical skills and problem-solving abilities. Demonstrated leadership and consultation skills. Must be flexible and adaptable to clinic changes. Experience or interest in managing musculoskeletal injuries with splinting, casting, DME fitting, etc. is preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Core duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Clinical
    • Obtains patient histories and performs physical examinations.
    • Orders diagnostic and therapeutic procedures/test.
    • Formulates working diagnoses for patients.
    • Develops and implements treatment plans.
    • Documents in the patient’s electronic medical record all findings.
    • Provides patient counseling, education, and coordination of care as necessary.
    • Makes appropriate patient referrals to practice physicians and other health care providers.
    • Lends assistance and provides solutions to scheduling personnel for patient triage problems as requested.
    • Performs other clinical duties as directed by supervising physician(s).
    • Participates in clinical meetings held by practice physician(s).
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Administration
    • Reports personnel matters and concerns to supervising physician or any member of administration
    • Coordinates scheduling of express care staff.
    • Participates in interviews, disciplinary process, time off approval for express care staff.
    • Submits all request for leave, continuing medical education to Chief Operating Officer and supervising physician(s) in a timely manner for approval and tracking.
    • Coordinates with supervising physician(s) and/or Chief Operating Officer regarding operational issues such as patient scheduling, medical assistance provided by certified medical assistant and other patient-flow matters.
    • Assist in ordering medical supplies and equipment, as necessary.
    • Participate in required or requested office meetings.
    • Performs all other duties as assigned.
  • Teamwork / Service Excellence
    • Communicates with CSOG physicians with regards to complex patient issues, imaging questions, or any other question with regards to the patient’s care while at express care.
    • Proactively supports company policies, philosophies, and decisions. Seizes opportunities to positively influence support staff.
    • Facilitates a shared expectation of success within the support staff team. Sets a personal example by “pitching in” when circumstances demand.
    • Listen to and accepts constructive suggestions from supervising physician and/or management team. Seeks out others point of view and actively participates in problem solving process.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct oversight of the clinical/administrative staff assisting in clinic.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Master of Science in Nursing or equivalent degree or Graduate of an accredited physician assistant program with state license
  • Nurse Practitioner Certification (NP–C) or PA license, in good standing in the state of Colorado
  • Furnishing number and DEA license
  • Current BLS certification for Healthcare providers
  • Up to date and current on CME credits, licenses and board certifications

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients. Requires manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 100 pounds. Assists in lifting patients weighing up to 300 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions and/or working irregular hours. Requires exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.
