Job Summary:
The Physician Assistant (PA) in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) works collaboratively with physiatrist and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care for patients with disabilities, chronic pain, and musculoskeletal or neurological conditions. The PA evaluates, diagnoses, and manages treatment plans to optimize patients’ functional independence and quality of life.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Clinical Responsibilities:
- Conduct patient evaluations, including medical history reviews, physical examinations, and functional assessments.
- Assist in diagnosing and managing conditions such as spinal cord injuries, stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), amputations, musculoskeletal disorders, and chronic pain.
- Develop and implement individualized rehabilitation treatment plans in collaboration with physiatrist.
- Prescribe medications, therapy, orthotics, prosthetics, and assistive devices.
- Assist with procedures / injections (e.g., trigger point, joint, Botox) when appropriate.
- Interpret diagnostic studies (e.g., EMG/NCS, imaging) as needed.
- Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment plans accordingly under physician supervision.
- Provide patient and family education on rehabilitation goals, home exercise programs, and lifestyle modifications.
Collaboration & Documentation:
- Work closely with physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, nurses, and other rehab team members.
- Document patient encounters, treatment plans, and progress notes in electronic medical records (EMR).
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case conferences.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Stay current with advancements in PM&R through continuing education.
- Adhere to hospital/clinic policies, compliance regulations, and best practices.
- Assist in research or quality improvement initiatives.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Education: Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
- Certification/Licensure:
- Current NCCPA certification.
- State PA license.
- BLS/ACLS certification.
- Experience:
- Prior experience in PM&R, orthopedics, neurology, or pain management preferred but new graduates with strong musculoskeletal/rehab training would be considered as there is extensive on-the-job training.
- Skills:
- Strong clinical assessment and procedural assistant skills.
- Excellent communication and patient-centered approach.
- Ability to work in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Work Environment:
- Inpatient rehabilitation units, acute care hospitals, outpatient clinics, or hybrid settings.
- May involve weekend and/or on-call duties.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for extended periods and assist with procedures.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $75,000.00 – $100,000.00 per year
