Full Job Description
The NP/PA is a core member of the Neurology care team, primarily responsible for managing inpatient neurology cases. They work closely with attending physicians, consultants, and residents. Outpatient responsibilities may be assigned after the first year of employment to support continuity of care and enhance access. The role focuses on high-quality patient care through critical thinking, evidence-based practice, and collaboration across disciplines. It also involves education, leadership, and research.
Primary Responsibilities:
Clinical Practice
- Apply advanced clinical knowledge and judgment to assess and manage neurology patients
- Develop treatment plans based on assessments, test results, and patient/family input
- Refer patients to appropriate healthcare providers or community resources as needed
- Monitor treatment effectiveness and adjust plans as necessary
- Support patient autonomy and include patients/families in decision-making whenever possible
Education
- Collaborate with the nurse educator to assess staff learning needs and deliver training
- Precept and mentor new NPs/PAs
- Model professional communication, leadership, and critical thinking for clinical staff
- Serve as a clinical resource and participate in educational programs and committee work
- Support accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities
- Maintain records related to educational requirements for nursing staff
Research and Quality Improvement
- Stay current with evidence-based practices and integrate them into care
- Support IRB-approved clinical research and trials
- Identify opportunities for research and quality improvement
- Participate in quality/performance improvement initiatives
- Share research findings and integrate them into clinical practice
Consultation and Leadership
- Serve as a clinical expert and provide leadership support to staff and other teams
- Promote staff development, recruitment, and retention
- Help develop and update clinical policies and procedures
Participate in hospital committees as assigned by nursing leadership
Delineation of Privileges:
- Round on all assigned patients and document daily progress notes
- Present new consults to Attending Physicians
- Provide regular updates to Attending Physicians
- Serve as liaison among hospital staff, specialists, and Neurology attendings
- Perform patient assessments and document findings
- Order diagnostics, medications, and therapeutic treatments
- Write prescriptions and discharge documentation
- Request specialty consults as needed
- Adjust medications and respond to clinical needs as they arise
- Collaborate with nursing and clinical educators to support excellence in care
- Educate and mentor peers, students, and interdisciplinary teams
- Participate in or conduct clinical research and present findings
- Master’s degree in Physician Assistant from an accredited program
- Current NJ Registered Nurse license and APN or PA licensure with prescriptive authority
- Specialty certification in Neuroscience and membership in a professional organization
- BLS and ACLS certifications
- Strong clinical expertise in Neuroscience care
- Proficiency with electronic health records and data entry
- Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team
