Established in 1980, the Greater Lawrence Family Health Center, Inc. (GLFHC) is a multi-site, mission-driven, non-profit organization employing over 700 staff whose primary focus is providing the highest quality patient care to a culturally diverse population throughout the Merrimack Valley. Nationally recognized as a leader in community medicine (family practice, pediatrics, internal medicine, and geriatrics), GLFHC has clinical sites throughout the service area and is the sponsoring organization for the Lawrence Family Medicine Residency program.
Position Summary:
To perform healthcare services to our patients under the direction and responsible supervision of a physician, and perform many of the routine but time-consuming tasks that physician usually perform.
Job Responsibilities and Performance Standards:
- Examines patient, takes medical history, records results, and makes preliminary diagnosis or decides on follow-up procedures.
- Administers or orders diagnostic tests such as X rays, electrocardiograms, and blood work, and interprets test results.
- Performs therapeutic procedures, such as immunizations, injections, suturing and wound care, and managing infections.
- Exercises professional judgment regarding consultation with supervising physicians concerning appropriate treatment.
- Develops and implements patient care plans, instructs and counsels patients, and maintains records of treatment and results.
- Prescribes medications to the extent allowable by state guidelines and clinic regulations.
- Provides general health education regarding matters such as proper diet, family planning, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance.
- Assists physician, as required, for emergency treatment and more complex procedures.
- On a regular basis participate in ongoing quality improvement activities related to individual, team, and organizational performance improvement.
- Travel between sites may be required.
Qualifications:
Experience
- Completion of a 4-year accredited physician assistant baccalaureate program and 1 year of clinical training; or
- Completion of a 2-year accredited physician assistant (PA) program (which, in turn, requires 2 years of undergraduate study), plus 2 years of clinical training following completion of PA program.
- State accreditation based on certifying exam. Continued employment requires 100 hours of continuing medical education every 2 years and passing a recertification examination every 6 years.
- Demonstrated competencies in dealing with all age groups, including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients.
Education
- Active Physician Assistant license in Massachusetts
