We are currently seeking a dedicated and compassionate Physician Assistant (PA) to join our team at CARMAhealth, our sister company based in Austin, TX. CARMAhealth was founded in 2017 by Dr. Carlos Tirado as an integrated primary care and behavioral health practice, providing in-network access for individuals struggling with addiction and co-occurring psychiatric conditions. Over the past seven years, we’ve expanded into Texas, Florida, and Virginia, offering in-person and telemedicine services to treatment facilities, hospitals, and state-funded agencies. We also provide outpatient medication management, as well as ketamine and TMS services.
We are looking to fill a PRN weekend Physician Assistant position.
Job Summary:
The Physician Assistant (PA) will specialize in Primary Care and Withdrawal Management, providing comprehensive care for individuals with substance use disorders (SUD) and withdrawal symptoms under the supervision of a licensed physician. Ideal candidates should have experience with detox protocols, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), and managing medical conditions for patients in a withdrawal management unit.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct patient histories and physical exams, provide daily rounds, and offer medical management in a withdrawal management unit.
- Develop and implement individualized detox protocols for alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, and other substances.
- Administer medications for withdrawal symptoms, including buprenorphine, benzodiazepines, and supportive medications.
- Collaborate with nursing and support staff to coordinate patient care.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests such as lab work, toxicology screenings, and metabolic panels.
- Manage uncomplicated medical complications related to substance withdrawal.
- Educate patients on withdrawal symptoms, MAT options, relapse prevention, and long-term recovery strategies.
- Work with an interdisciplinary team, including physicians, nurses, therapists, and case managers, to ensure holistic patient care.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date electronic medical records (EMR) in compliance with HIPAA and confidentiality guidelines.
- Ensure adherence to state and federal regulations related to withdrawal management and MAT.
- Stay current on evidence-based practices in withdrawal management through ongoing education.
Qualifications:
- Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) from an accredited PA program.
- Active PA state licensure in Texas.
- Experience in withdrawal management and substance use disorders is preferred but not required.
- Active DEA license.
- Knowledge of withdrawal management protocols, addiction pharmacology, and MAT guidelines.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with distressed patients.
- Ability to manage urgent/emergent situations, including medical crises.
- Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR/EMR) and telehealth platforms.
Work Schedule & Environment:
- PRN Weekends
- The role may involve work in detox facilities, inpatient or outpatient substance abuse programs, or through telehealth services.
- The position will primarily be on-site.
