Job Summary:

This position works as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide psychiatric services to behavioral health patients in outpatient and/or inpatient Comprehensive Mental Health settings. Under the supervision of an MD or DO Psychiatrist, the PA will assume client care responsibilities inclusive of psychiatric evaluation, professional diagnoses and prescribing and/or administering treatment. Applies medical knowledge and skills to the process of diagnosis, prevention and treatment of illnesses. Provides psychiatric evaluation and diagnostic assessment offering psychotropic treatment options and input to treatment plan in collaboration with client/guardian. Performs, analyzes and documents findings for mental health and substance abuse assessments and interventions as appropriate for specialty and population served. Other duties include consultation regarding diagnosis and treatment to other agency staff or to community partners including emergency room and other local practices. Assists when needed in authorization of medical necessity and other utilization management needs of clients served.

Essential Functions: Under the supervision of a Psychiatric MD/DO:

1. Will provide services in outpatient and periodically in inpatient setting.

2. Performs psychiatric diagnostic evaluations to determine diagnoses, treatment strategies, and care coordination needs for clients with mental health, substance use, or other psychiatric and medical needs.

3. Manages to psychiatric/medical needs of patients including psychiatric medication management.

4. Assesses need for and provides clinical interpretation for ongoing evaluation needs for prescribed treatments to include but not limited to: lab tests, genetic testing, radiologic tests, ECG, CT or specialty consults and coordination needs. Orders, monitors and evaluates these tests and services.

5. Completes medication and health education to clients to include but not limited to informed consent which includes describing risks, benefits, side effects, and alternative treatments for medications ordered. Provides health/wellness management, metabolic risk reduction strategies.

6. Performs timely, concurrent, accurate clinical and billing documentation in the electronic health record which meets professional standards in compliance with State and Federal regulations. Documentation and billing coding for all services fully support medical necessity and appropriate coding standards.

7. Care coordination: Professional and timely communication/care coordination with client/families/involved agencies/ PCP/ and other specialty care providers to ensure timely and coordinated treatment planning and evaluation of client progress. Utilizes other system resources when available, to efficiently coordinate care needs for clients.

8. Assures timely access to care, demonstrates flexibility in scheduling to fully meet client needs, and meets applicable productivity standards.

9. Provides psychiatric medical treatment planning, coordination and consultation with multidisciplinary team members and external providers and agencies to ensure quality treatment through, but not limited to huddles, staffings, psychiatric consultation, treatment team meetings.

11. Completes or assists in completion of involuntary holds as allowed by law. Performs professional comprehensive and timely court ordered mental health evaluations for M-1, (27-10), M-9, EC holds and releases to asses appropriate risk/safety management and treatment in least restrictive setting.

12. Participates in periodic night, weekend or holiday coverage of inpatient needs at our Acute Treatment Unit.

This position may require you to work standard hours, as well as flexible hours before and after standard hours, and extra time in excess of 40 hours in a work week.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Licensed PA with prescriptive authority in good standing in the state of Colorado.

Medical PA with experience, knowledge and competency in assessing and treating a wide range of psychiatric disorders AND/OR Specialty Certification in Child, Adult, or Geriatric Psych.

Knowledge of theoretical and pharmacological issues related to clinical treatment of common psychiatric disorders.

Experience in Community Mental Health, Recovery Models of Care and Resilience Theory preferred.

Must have sufficient language skills and be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing to patients.

Must possess basic computer kills and type 25+ w.p.m. for the input and output of patient information using electronic record, online information portals, email communications, etc.
