The Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a licensed healthcare provider who works closely with the supervising gastroenterologist to provide clinical care, coordinate patient management, and support in the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of gastrointestinal conditions. The PA/NP is responsible for conducting patient assessments, developing care plans, performing diagnostic procedures, and ensuring effective communication with the healthcare team and patients. The role also includes pre-operative and post-operative evaluations, patient education, and assisting with procedures as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
- Provide clinical management in collaboration with the gastroenterologist and healthcare team, including patient assessments, diagnosis, and treatment planning for GI conditions.
- Assist with and perform diagnostic procedures, such as colonoscopies and endoscopies, under the supervision of the gastroenterologist.
- Conduct pre-operative evaluations, including medical history review, physical exams, and ordering necessary diagnostic tests for gastrointestinal procedures.
- Document patient encounters, including detailed medical histories, examination findings, treatment plans, and progress notes in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Provide patient education on GI conditions, procedures, and lifestyle changes to manage or prevent symptoms.
- Coordinate care and communicate with other healthcare providers, including nutritionists, imaging centers, and primary care physicians.
- Follow up on test results, schedule follow-up appointments, and ensure that patients are progressing according to treatment plans.
- Assist in managing in-office procedures, such as biopsies, colonoscopies, and endoscopies.
- Act as a liaison between patients and the gastroenterologist, ensuring clear and accurate communication.
- Participate in rounding and patient consultations, both in the hospital and outpatient clinic settings.
- Stay updated on current GI procedures, best practices, and continuing education opportunities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program.
- Licensed as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in the State of Texas.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications.
- Previous experience in gastroenterology, internal medicine, or a related specialty preferred.
- Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) and other relevant computer systems.
- Eligible for hospital privileges.
