Full Job Description

Broad Function:

Physician Assistant practice primarily as a direct health care provider in the Emergency Care Unit. They work with patients and their families to coordinate the delivery of the patient’s care. Their responsibilities include but are not limited to, obtaining health histories and performing physical examinations, ordering appropriate diagnostic tests and treatment regimens, providing patient, family, nursing staff education and being available for consultations and crisis intervention. They work closely with the patient/significant others/families, physicians, nurses to develop an appropriate plan of care which is then communicated effectively to the entire interdisciplinary team.

Article 131-B Parts 6540 through 6548 authorized physician assistance certified by the New York State Education Department to use the title “Physician Assistant” and engage in such practice. This may include the performance of primary health care services and the issuance of prescriptions. As an employee of a facility licensed under Article 28 of the New York State Public Health Law Chapter V, Subchapter A, Article 1, Part 400.10 of the Rules and Regulations of the State of New York Department of Health, and in compliance with the New York State Education Law the Commissioner of Education, the Physician Assistant will practice within the guidelines of the written practice agreement and practice protocols.

Qualifications:

  • Must possess current licensure as a Physician’s Assistant in NYS.
  • Two (2) to four (4) years of acute care experience in Emergency Medicine/Outpatient medicine preferred.
  • Must possess demonstrative effective communication skills both written and verbal.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Systematically gather relevant data, identify clinical signs/symptoms necessary for a comprehensive evaluation of the patient’s health status.
  • Perform and record/dictate the patient’s health history and physical examination and place it in the progress notes of the patient’s medical record.
  • Present pertinent information on selected patients to the appropriate attending physician/designee.
  • Formulate definitive conclusions concerning the patient’s status and communicate these to the attending physician/designee and members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Plan/implement/evaluate appropriate intervention and management to insure the patient’s individualized expert care.
  • Write orders based on the clinical status of the acutely ill patient. Initiate appropriate diagnostic tests which enhance definitive patient management.
  • Periodically revise the medial/nursing care based on observations of the patient as documented by self and other personnel.
  • Develop a comprehensive plan for education and rehabilitation of a patient with a selected disease process; initiate and implement plans for their education and discharge.
  • Participate in patient care conferences when appropriate.
  • Describe the etiology and symptomatology of each selected disease process within specialty area.
  • Discuss current trends in management of patients with each selected disease process.
  • Discuss the pathological alterations of normal anatomy and physiology which define a selected disease process in specialty area.
  • Consistently execute those aspects of the nursing care plan requiring specialized clinical expertise and skill.
  • Recognize and address situations and concurrent medical problems which pose a challenge to the patient’s return to their preadmission status.
  • Evaluate the patient’s needs and implement the appropriate medical and nursing interventions directed toward the restoration of optimal mental and physical well being of the patient and family as they cope with the crisis of acute/chronic illness.
  • Provide direction for creative approaches to the management of complex patient problems.
  • Assist with the communication of the discharge plan to the patient and significant others.
  • Obtain the results of diagnostic studies and initiate further treatment in collaboration with attending physician/designee.
  • Consistently demonstrate commitment and accountability for the primary responsibility of providing quality patient care to a specialized group of patients.
  • Always demonstrate respect for the patient’s confidentiality.
  • Throughout the hospitalization, demonstrate responsiveness to the patient and family members.
  • Interpret medical/nursing management to the patient, family and other health care professionals.
  • Discuss the stages of death and dying and methods of intervention appropriate to each patient, which will enhance and ensure quality of nursing care.
  • Participate in patient rounds, conferences with the nurses, patients and/or social workers.
  • Incorporate new scientific findings in specific area of expertise into clinical practice.
  • Maintain awareness of new developments in specialized area of expertise.
  • Apply appropriate current theoretical concepts when implementing changes in medical/nursing care.
  • Identify the appropriate personnel to contact for specific problems.
  • Interact with, and appropriately involve other health professionals in patient management.
  • Demonstrate an awareness and utilization of community resources.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of computers/information systems.
  • Demonstrate competence in crisis situations.
  • Recognize/identify critical changes in patient’s clinical status.
  • Identify the clinical manifestations of an emergency situation which require immediate intervention and respond in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • Adjust the medical/nursing regimen to coincide with changes in the patient’s clinical status.
  • Identify and respond appropriately to the impact of the crisis of acute illness upon the patient, family and other members of the health care team.
  • Describe the effects of stress and anxiety on the acutely/critically ill/injured and the behavioral responses to crisis and coping mechanisms.
  • Identify human behavior and coping methods in response to crisis situations.
  • Provides culturally appropriate care to all populations.
  • Demonstrates practice reflective of the understanding of the age appropriate/developmental needs specific to their respective patient population.
  • Must be able to perform simple laceration wound suturing and simple wound care.
  • Must be able to perform simple splinting for fractures as well as other simple extremity injury care.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $110,000.00 – $145,000.00 per year
