The surgical physician assistant is responsible for assisting in the pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative care of the patient under the direction of the supervising physician throughout the network. Additionally, the surgical physician assistant is responsible for providing surgical in-house coverage on a periodic rotating 24-hour basis as scheduled. As with any other health care professional, the physician assistant is charged with being a patient advocate in the health care system.
SURGICAL SERVICES:

The PA will handle Inpatient consults, admissions, discharges and management of multiple surgical subspecialties including general surgery, neurosurgery, vascular, urology, obgyn, gyn onc, ENT and plastics. OR as necessary for emergent cases and late cases after shift start at 3pm.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Initial evaluation, history and physical examination of all surgical patients whether they are inpatient, ambulatory patients.
- Assist the supervising physician in the intra-operative care of the patient as the first or second assistant.
- Daily evaluation of patients, appropriate use of Electronic Medical Record.
- Perform therapeutic and diagnostic procedures as directed by the supervising physician. (See credentials list.)
- As available, assist the supervising physician with the weekly surgical clinics as assigned.
- Attend appropriate continuing medical education so as to maintain the National Certification and Pennsylvania License.
- Assist the supervising physician with the evaluation and management of their in-house and emergency admission patients.
- Adjunct faculty to various college/university programs as clinical instructors.
- Perform History and Physical Examinations as well as pre-anesthesia evaluations in Pre-Admission Testing and Interventional Radiology as assigned.
- Act as supplemental staff to other Campuses in the capacity listed above.
- Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment and knowledge of growth and development appropriate to the age of the patient treated
- Demonstrates/models St. Luke’s Hospital and Health Network core values and customer service behaviors in interactions with all customers (internal and external).
- Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/Entity as well as the proper release of information.
- Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be board eligible or board-Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner or Medical Physician Assistant with current license to practice in the state of Pennsylvania or New Jersey, as determined by the job location.
Although one year experience in a similar setting is preferred, new grads are encouraged to apply!
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Sitting for up to 5 hours per day; 1 hour at a time. Standing for up to 5 hours per day, 2 hours at a time. Walking for up to 3 hours per day; 1 hour at a time. Fingering and handling small objects frequently. Twisting and turning of hand occasionally. Consistently lift, carry, and push objects up to 10 lbs. Occasionally lift, carry and push objects up to 75 lbs. Transport patients weighing up to 250 lbs via wheel chair or stretcher. Frequently stoop and bend. Frequently reach above shoulder level. Must be able to perceive attributes of an object through touch. Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation. Seeing as is relates to general, near, far, color and peripheral vision.
