The Pediatric Surgical Physician Assistant must be highly motivated and interested in expanding their knowledge and skills. There is opportunity for growth in leadership within the organization. The Pediatric Surgical PA will be a valued team member who is nurtured to practice at the top of their ability and license.
PAs will be trained by pediatric surgical providers to deliver specialized care in surgical subspecialties, such as, trauma, orthopedics, general pediatric surgery, neurosurgery, and ENT. The Physician Assistant will work closely with pediatric surgical specialists in Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital and the Emergency Department. Coverage is 24/7 and worked in 12-hour shifts. The Pediatric Surgical PA program will have autonomy in scheduling and management and will report to the CMO of the Children’s Hospital.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- ED consults
- Inpatient consults and rounds
- Answer calls for hospitalized patients and discharged patients
- Coordinate care with other team members and service lines
- Patient discharge
- Patient, family, and team member education
- Assist with surgical procedures; such as ICP monitor placement, I&D, suturing, etc.
- Manage clinical needs related to gastrostomy tube, central lines, and wound care
- Participation in hospital programs and meetings pertinent to surgical services, such as: Trauma, M&M, Process Improvement, Surgical care
While the Pediatric Surgical PA will have broad responsibilities, these will be prioritized. Trauma care is prioritized over other services. A surge plan will be followed when multiple needs occur simultaneously.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Physician Assistant Medicine or Health Sciences see licensure requirments
- Physician Assistant License from Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners and Certification by a recognized national professional accrediting organization. Current BLS Certfication; NCCPA-National Commission on Certification of Physician’s Assistants
