Job Description
DUTIES:
- Assist with the care and management of critically ill cardiac patients, including those with cardiogenic shock, cardiac arrest, mixed shock, complicated acute coronary syndromes, valvular disease, infectious endocarditis, complicated arrhythmias, and other critical care issues complicating patients with baseline cardiovascular disease.
- Round on these patients as part of multidisciplinary teams, performing critical care procedures within their scope of practice.
- Manage mechanical circulatory support devices such as IABP, Impella, and ECMO.
- Participate in family meetings and consultations.
TECHNICAL SKILLS:
- Manage ICU patients, including mechanical ventilation and mechanical circulatory support (MCS).
- Perform ICU procedures such as central line placement, arterial line placement, hemodialysis catheter placement, pulmonary artery catheter placement, and transvenous pacemaker placement.
- Write histories and physicals (H&Ps) and progress notes, and place orders for treatment.
SOFTWARE:
- EPIC
WORKLOAD, UTILIZATION, NUMBER OF PATIENTS, STAFFING, AND HOURS:
- This is a Level 1 Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, with 20 physical beds, but a census that varies between 15 to 26 patients, distributed across two teams supervised by an attending cardiologist with expertise and training in critical care cardiology.
- Shifts are 12 hours long to provide 24/7 coverage.
- The team consists of other Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), residents, fellows, and nurses.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Current New York State registration as a Physician Assistant; or 2. Current limited permit issued by New York State to practice as a Physician Assistant.
